The Greek merchants and navigators, attracted by the favorable position and by the advantages of the trade with the native Getae, have founded at the Black Sea shore, about 25 centuries ago, some settlements which became, in time, prosperous cities.
One of them is Callatis situated on the place of today's Mangalia (in Greek Callatis means the (most) beautiful).

There is more than that: from legendary gods-of-the-seas-processions and festivals, and two and a half thousand year old Greek citie ruins, to sailor’s stories, shipwrecks and underwater treasures, you have it all in one place, on the coast of the Black Sea and its waves.
Follow the waving moves, and dance your way into the Callatis Festival - honoring both the sea and the ancient Greek city underneath nowadays Mangalia, with music, dance and beauty, - and then into the mysterious world of the (yet undiscovered) treasures of the Black Sea.
Callatis is the Greek name for the ancient city, the remains of which still exist underneath the new town.

At Tomis, the archaeological excavations, between 1971-1974 noticed the discovery of huts or semihuts linked to the beginning of settlements history and which can be attributed to the indigen Getians, but also to the new-comer Greeks.
An event in 260 B.C. described by the historian Memnon from Pontic Heracleea, emphasised Tomis importance, as it was disputed on one hand by the confederation of Histria and Callatis and, on the other hand, by Bizantyum, the well-known town on the Hellespontic coast, which wanted to affirm its hegemony here, too.
It is possible that, following Callatis' example, which entered into a pact with the Romans (the well-known Callatis foedus), the other towns, inclusively Tomis set such kind of agreement with Rome.
