  Calliandra calothyrsus
Calliandra forage is usually cut by hand to a height of about 1 m and fed to tethered or stabled animals.
Calliandra grows on all soil types and is well adapted to acid soils of poor fertility, but can respond to fertilizer application on such soils.
Calliandra does not take well from stakes and is therefore generally sown directly in the field or in the nursery.

 Factsheet - Calliandra calothyrsus
Calliandra is generally recommended for cut-and-carry feeding rather than for use in direct grazing systems.
Despite this, reasonable animal production is achieved where calliandra has been adopted as a supplement to poor quality basal diets or as a partial replacement of concentrate feeds.
Freshly harvested leaves of calliandra are generally highly palatable to ruminants where animals have prior experience with the forage, although some problems with palatability have been reported from Mexico and Central America.

Calliandra leaf meal in goat rations: Effects on protein degradability in the rumen and growth in goats
Calliandra calothyrsus is one of the multi-purpose tree species that has been intensively evaluated in Uganda since 1989 under the agroforestry programme.
The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of levels of substitution of Calliandra leaf meal (CLM) for SBM on animal performance, especially in relation to energy and nitrogen retention.

IngentaConnect Alley cropping of maize with calliandra and leucaena in the subhu...
An approach to integrating calliandra (Calliandra calothyrsus Meissner) and leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit), two promising agroforestry tree species, into maize (Zea mays L.) production system was investigated in the subhumid highlands of central Kenya during four maize-growing seasons from 1994 to 1996.
Yields of calliandra alley- cropped maize were 11% to 51% lower than those of nonalley-cropped treatments receiving calliandra prunings from ex situ grown trees; the decrease was 2% to 17% with leucaena, indicating that calliandra hedges were more competitive than leucaena hedges.

The effect of supplementing urea treated maize stover with Tithonia, Calliandra and Sesbania to growing goats
Calliandra and Sesbania have been used to supplement maize stover and teff straw respectively with significant increases in weight gains (Kaitho 1997; Nherera et al 1998).
Tithonia (leaves and tender shoots), Calliandra and Sesbania (leaves) were collected from already established pure stands planted in rows to demarcate strips of land at the Bukura Energy Centre adjacent to the college.
These results are in agreement with Nherera et al (1998) where Calliandra despite having high levels of both soluble and insoluble proanthocyanidins, and low intake of maize stover and low N intake, recorded the fastest growth rates (42g/day) compared to the three accessions of Leucaena, i.e.

 Calliandra
(often simply called "calliandra") is a small agroforestry tree native to Central America and Mexico that is cultivated widely in the humid tropics.
While the predominant use of calliandra is the production of fodder for ruminant livestock, other uses are also found within different farming systems and include the provision of green manure, fuelwood, shade for coffee and tea, land rehabilitation, erosion control, and honey production.
The species grows well on acidic soils where other agroforestry trees perform poorly, and it is primarily used outside its native range in areas where high population densities place pressure on limited land resources, and where agroforestry systems are being developed to maintain and sustain agricultural production.

Calliandra haematocephala is a sub-tropical plant the family of which is native to the India, Mexico, Madagascar, South America and the United States.
Our Calliandra in So Cal (dry climate of E of San Diego) blooms best in winter (November till April) and at that time is really covered both with blooms and their less pretty spent brown dry remnants.
If Calliandra does best in humidity, it has clearly shifted its blooming time here to the wettest period since during the dry hot summer and fall it does not bloom at all (I see the difference from Florida humid tropical climate).

1) Through on-station and on-farm participatory research in the central Kenyan highlands, World Agroforestry researchers and their national partners in 1996 identified Calliandra calothyrsus, a leguminous fodder tree, as a species that can be grown on farms and used as a substitute for expensive commercial dairy meal.
Using calliandra as a protein substitute can increase a farmer's annual income by more than USD 150 per cow per year.
With an estimated 400 000 smallholder dairy farmers in Kenya who have one or two cows each, the potential benefits from adopting calliandra amount to about USD 102 million a year in the Kenya smallholder dairy sector alone.
