 Callichthyidae
The fishes of the family Callichthyidae are distinguished and easily recognized by having the body almost completely protected by a bony armor composed of two longitudinal series of dermal plates.
This clade is the sister-group to the family Callichthyidae.
The Neotropical family Callichthyidae is found in most South American river drainages (Paraná-Paraguay, São Francisco, Atlantic Coastal basins in Brazil, Amazonas, Orinoco, Maracaibo, Magdalena), as well as in a few rivers in Panama, as shown in red in the figure below.

Έτσι έχουμε «Γατόψαρα» της οικογένειας CALLICHTHYIDAE που ζουν σε πολύ μαλακά (2,0 dGH) και πολύ όξινα νερά με χαμηλό pH (ακόμα και >6,0), έως πραγματικά ουδέτερα νερά (6,0 dGH, pH 7,0 – 7,5) και σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις κάπως σκληρά (25 dGH) και αλκαλικά (pH 8,0).
Τα είδη «Γατόψαρων» της οικογένειας CALLICHTHYIDAE είναι ψάρια κατάλληλα για τα περισσότερα community tanks, μιας και το μέγεθός τους δεν ξεπερνάει τα 18 cm σε μήκος στα πιο μεγαλόσωμα; είδη (Callichthys callichthys), φτάνει τα 12 cm στα μέτριου μεγέθους είδη; (Hoplosternum species).
