Pygmy Marmoset - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pygmy Marmoset (Callithrix (Cebuella) pygmaea) is a monkey native to the rainforest canopies of western Brazil, southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, and eastern Peru.
It is one of the smallest primates, with its body length ranging from 14-16 cm (excluding the 15-20 cm tail).
Despite its name, the Pygmy Marmoset is somewhat different from the typical marmosets classified in genus Callithrix.

The present study concentrated on quantifying the in vitro age- and species-specific rate of regeneration of Retina Ganglion Cells (RGC) from rats and monkeys.
The method consisted of explanting retinal tissue from Sprague-Dawley rats and Callithrix jacchus monkeys of different ontogenetic ages.
The initial data prove that this experimental setup is suitable to determine both age- and species-specific characteristics in the regenerative abilities of neuronal cells.

The use of nonhuman primates in biomedical research results from their phylogenetic, biochemical, and physiological similarity to humans, and some callitrichid species are widely used as experimental models in parasitological research (Cooper, 1968), despite the fact that current knowledge concerning natural parasitism is considered to be far from satisfactory (Dunn, 1979).
The common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus (Primates, Callitrichidae), known as the sagüi-do-Nordeste, sagüi-comum or sagüi-de-tufos-brancos, is widely distributed in the northeast of Brazil, north of the Rio São Francisco and east of the Rio Parnaíba, and has also been introduced into various regions in the southeast of Brazil (Auricchio, 1995).
Although our data, like the majority of studies conducted on Callithrix jacchus in captivity, do not suggest seasonality in births (Johnson et al., 1991), the number of births is higher in the spring.

They are distinguished from all other apes by the great backward prolongation of the bony cranium, the orbits of which, though smaller than those of Nyctipithecus, are, nevertheless, separated, but by an imperfect bony septum.
A few other kinds of American apes, together forming the genus Callithrix, somewhat resemble the night apes, but that the eyes are much smaller, and the nostrils wider apart.
They differ from Chrysothrix in having small canine teeth, and the tail furnished with long hairs.

Two of the sequencing projects are aimed at gaining new insights into model organisms utilized in research on drug development and disease susceptibility.
They are: sequencing the genome of a fellow primate, the marmoset (Callithrix jacchus); and identification of genetic variations (in the form of single nucleotide polymorphisms) in eight strains of rats.
The marmoset is a key model organism used in neurobiological studies of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.
