Genetics and Molecular Biology - Mitochondrial DNA-like sequence in the nuclear genome of Saguinus (Callitrichinae, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
The relatively ancient divergence of the Cebidae (Callitrichinae, Aotinae and Cebinae) may have favored confounding homoplasies.
Saguinus was split into two clusters: a basal lineage, cluster 1, with non-significant bootstrap values (68.1%), and a sister group of the Callitrichinae, cluster 2 (Figure 3).
This probably reflects saturation of the bases as a consequence of the relatively ancient divergence between the Callitrichinae and Aotinae-Cebinae.

Digimorph - Callimico goeldii (Goeldi's monkey)
The research for which these CT data were collected indicates that this primitive anthropoid cranial morphology included considerable cranial pneumatization via the paranasal sinuses.
Callimico goeldii is a member of the Callitrichinae, a group of small platyrrhines that are distinctive in having claw-like bilaterally compressed finger nails.
Callimico is a medium-sized callitrichine, with males and females averaging 499 g and 468 g respectively (Fleagle, 1999).

Genetics and Molecular Biology - Molecular phylogeny of the genus Saguinus (Platyrrhini, Primates) based on the ND1 ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
The systematics of the subfamily Callitrichinae (Platyrrhini, Primates), a group of small monkeys from South America and Panama, remains an area of considerable discussion despite many investigations, there being continuing controversy over subgeneric taxonomic classifications based on morphological characters.
The basal genus of the Callitrichinae is Saguinus (Barroso et al., 1997; Chaves et al., 1999; Schneider et al., 1996), a widely distributed genus which occurs from the Amazon basin northward into Panama (Hershkovitz, 1977; Rylands et al.
Since Saguinus is basal to the other Callitrichinae (Schneider et al., 1996; Barroso et al., 1997; Chaves et al., 1999;) the outgroup could not come from this subfamily, because of which we used the monkey Cebus apella (Cebinae, Cebidae), a closely related taxon, as the outgroup.

Problems and Proposed Solutions in Platyrrhine Phylogeny
Both of Ford's schemes have Callitrichinae as the sister of the pitheciin-ateline clade.
We plan to gather extensive additional DNA sequence data in order to test the congruent branching arrangements of the epsilon and IRBP maximum parsimony trees, especially those arrangements that are controversial when compared to the cladistic evidence from previous morphological studies (11-14).
To pursue these aims, it will be important to enlarge the DNA sequence data from additional ceboid species and outgroup species (from a broader range of non-ceboid primates) and from noncoding regions (introns) of additional unlinked nuclear genes.

IngentaConnect Composition and Nutritional Characteristics of Fungi Consumed by ...
Fungi appear to be a low-quality food resource for Callimico goeldii and may contribute to their relatively large home ranges and low population density compared to other Callitrichinae.
Research on the ability of Callimico goeldii to digest fungi is needed to understand fully the nutritional value of fungi to them.
We discuss adaptations Callimico goeldii may have for improving their ability to obtain nutrients from fungi and potential ecological correlates of mycophagy.

Cone pigment polymorphism in New World monkeys: Are all pigments created equal?
Most platyrrhine monkeys have a triallelic M/L opsin gene polymorphisin that underlies significant individual variations in color vision.
A survey of the frequencies of these polymorphic genes Suggests that the three alleles occur with equal frequency among squirrel monkeys (subfamily Cebinae), but are not equally frequent in a number of species from the subfamily Callitrichinae.
This departure from equal frequency in the Callitrichids should slightly increase the ratio of dichromats to trichromats in the population and significantly after the relative representation of the three possible dichromatic and trichromatic phenotypes.

 Marmosets and Tamarins
Social groups consist of a breeding female, one to three breeding males and offspring, which are born once or twice annually in the form of nonidentical twins.
Only the Goeldi’s monkey, a group offshoot belonging to the same Callitrichinae subfamily, produces single offspring.
All species practice a unique form of cooperative rearing.

Disotell et al. 2003   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
To date, four nuclear loci (epsilon-globin, beta-2-microglobulin, IRBP, G6PD) have been surveyed for all extant genera of New World monkeys.
Though these works agree on the monophyly of each of the Atelidae, Pitheciidae, and Cebidae (Cebinae + Aotinae + Callitrichinae), they disagree on the relative relationships among the families.
Epsilon-globin and beta-2-microglobulin (both autosomal) infer a sister-relationship between the Atelidae and Pitheciidae; IRBP (autosomal) supports a clade of Pitheciidae and Cebidae; G6PD (X-chromosomal) groups the Atelidae with the Cebidae.
