Calochortus uniflorus is one of the Star Tulips with petals that are largely hairless, having satiny pink petals and deep lavender anthers.
Calochortus albus, found in the Coast Ranges, as well as the Sierra Nevada, is a translucent pearly white, although red varieties are also found, the red hue varying from rusty tints to a beautiful deep purple-red.

Lily Family - Calochortus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The four flowers pictured here are all members of the Calochortus genus, and thus share an even closer botanical kinship within the Lily Family.
Calochortus (Greek for "beautiful grass) flowers - the Mariposa Lilies, Sego Lilies, and Star Tulips - have a have the most refined, subtle petals, often covered with delicate hairs.
Of various Calochortus flower essences this Star Tulip - which grows on the mist and fog-enshrouded coastal bluffs - is the most inward in its effects, enhancing meditation, dream recall, and particularly encouraging men to contact their anima, or inner feminine qualities.

CPC Plant Profile - National Collection of Endangered Plants
Calochortus coxii is restricted to serpentine-derived soils, but despite the widespread occurrence of these soils, a considerable amount of apparently suitable habitat is unoccupied (Fredricks 1989 in Fredricks 1993).
In general, Calochortus life history is typical of long-lived herbaceous perennials: individual survival makes the largest contribution to growth rate, reproduction and mortality appear episodic, and reproductive success and seedling establishment appear to limit populations to certain habitats (Feidler et al.

Calochortus Training   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
This training block was organized in conjunction with the Calochortus upquaensis (Mariposa Lilly) Habitat Restoration Project taking place on the Umpqua National Forest and is overseen by Chris Rusch, the botanist for the Tiller Ranger District.
The objectives of the Calochortus Habitat Restoration Project is to promote the continued recovery of the species that is threatened by fire exclusion and the encroachment of young conifer thickets that are moving onto the serpentine meadows and shading out the Calochortus.
The Calochortus Project was a perfect fit for a training block that seeks to expand the knowledge base of workers, because the project required technical assessment and monitoring work, along with ecological prescription design, and on the ground implementation.

CPC Plant Profile - National Collection of Endangered Plants
Calochortus umpquaensis is only found along the Umpqua River, and within this narrow range, it is restricted to serpentine-derived soils that are especially high in nickel, cadmium, magnesium and phosphorous (Fredricks 1992).
Most of these populations are small, but one located on public (BLM) land is extensive and conservation of this population is critical for the viability of the species (Fredricks 1992).

 [pbs] Calochortus
I am a bit worried about what the rain will do to my Calochortus since I've read not to water them after they start blooming and most have bloomed or were blooming.
In Kern County we saw Calochortus amoenus (a pretty pink globe kind) growing not far from the road on a grassy bank.
I also added some pictures of some Calochortus luteus we saw near Merced when we were searching for the vernal pools near where they were planning to build the new University of California.

Calochortus luteus in Alameda also does not seem to compete well, so I keep the beds free of weeds or intentional annuals.
I have had fairly good success with other native bulbs coexisting with low ground cover such as Epilobium septentrionale or a creeping Wooly Thyme from the local nursery.

Unfortunately, the authors also point out that Calochortus macrocarpus is a tasty plant for cattle, one of the reasons it is now quite uncommon.
