		Cape Verde Shearwater, Calonectris edwardsii: This has traditionally been treated as a subspecies of Cory's Shearwater although it was originally described as a distinct species.
		Calonectris shearwaters may feed up to 500 km from their breeding grounds&emdash;the nearest point in the Cape Verde archipelago, where this bird breeds, is 460 km away.

		Of further relevance is the distances between the three Calonectris species and the two groups: to the Ardenna group mean 10.51% (SD 0.56); to the smaller Puffinus group mean 9.62% (SD 0.80).
		Since the distances between Calonectris and the two groups approximates the distance between the two groups themselves, this is further evidence that the two groups should be differentiated at the generic level.
		Wolters (1975-82) recognised two genera within the group of larger shearwaters (although griseus and tenuirostris remained in Puffinus): Ardenna Reichenbach 1853, to which he assigned gravis and carneipes, with creatopus as a subspecies; and Thyellodroma Stejneger 1888, to which he assigned pacificus and bulleri (1975-82: 36).

		Massa & Lo Valvo 1986 Biometrical and biological considerations on the Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea.
		Of more interest to birders is that it has been proven in the last years that there is some exchange of birds between colonies of borealis (at least proven from Selvagem islands, between Madeira and Canary Islands) and the Mediterreanean colonies.
		This September a colleague of mine is at El Hierro and La Palma islands and I hope she has taken some photographic material on the Calonectris of these underwatched Canary islands.

	Senegal - Seabird species
		Usually the most numerous subspecies of the Calonectris complex in October and November, but its occurrence is unpredictable.
		For example, 5.800 Calonectris Shearwaters were seen off the Cap Vert peninsula on 10th-12th November 2001, with an estimated 95% Cory's Shearwaters and less than 5% Cape Verde Shearwaters.
		The Swedish team could not positively identify a single bird as belonging to this subspecies in 2003.

		Cory`s Shearwater Calonectris diomedea, Short-toed Lark Calandrella brachydactyla and Blue Rock Thrush Monticola solitarius are the main breeding birds, while Purple Heron Ardea purpurea, European Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus, Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus, Red-Footed Falcon Falco vespertinus, Eurasian Scops Owl Otus scops, Hoopoe Upupa epops, Black-eared Wheater Oenanthe hispanica can be encountered especially in spring.
		In fact it is one of the main sites around the coast for the local birdwatchers to carry out migratory observations over the sea.
