CALOOCAN used to be part of the township of Tondo.
As a center of industry and commerce, Caloocan gained prominence in the early 1960s, prompting Congress to pass Republic Act No. 3278 that converted the town into a city, which was signed into law on February 16, 1962, by then President Diosdado P. Macapagal.
The conversion into a city finally broke the shackles that bound the old municipality to the provincial government of Rizal and was achieved through the wishes of the town’s residents, expressed in a plebiscite held in 1961, pursuant to the original charter.

Caloocan City, Philippines (AHN) - Philippine Police filed multiple murder charges on Thursday against a Valenzuela City, Philippine village captain and two other men accused of killing six factory workers in Caloocan City early last Sunday morning.
The trio were charged with multiple murder charges at the office of Caloocan City Assistant Prosecutor Ferdinand Valbuena.
Reports indicate the victims had just come from a drinking session and were allegedly picked up before midnight on Saturday by several men on board vehicles after a tricycle driver complained of their loud voices.

A ranking official of the Caloocan City yesterday survived an ambush attempt after he managed to shoot back and killed one of four motorcycle-riding gunmen and wounding another, announced Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri.
Maria and his two companions were not hurt in the ambush try and the police are now looking for one of the suspects who sustained a gunshot wound in the stomach in the foiled attack.
Maria is the chief of the city hall’s Reformed Department of Public Safety and Traffic Management (RDPSTM) and was on his way to his office at Biglang Awa Street around 11:30 a.m.

Edgar Erice, officially cutting off his political ties with City Mayor Reynaldo Malonzo, yesterday said he has submitted and declared his "irrevocable resignation" from the Lakas Party, where Malonzo is the local party chairman.
I believe that the next (candidate for) mayor should come either from the present crop of capable and skilled local city officials or from partymates and not from his (second) family.
Erice railed at the mayor saying he is not in favor of Malonzo’s "perpetuating" himself in power when there are many more among his partymates and the local city officials with greater capability, proven skills and know-how than his wife.
