Calshot Spit.The hangars and slipway at the eastern extremity were joined to the camp on the mainland by narrow gauge railway.
Grey,the original purpose of Calshot was the testing of seaplanes for the RFC Naval wing.One of the first aircaft to be based there was the Borel Hydro-Mono No.83 pictured below in mid 1913.
Between the wars the station continued with training,testing etc.Extra excitement came in the form of the RAF High Speed Flight which visited in 1927, 1929 and 1931 in order to train for the Schneider Trophy Races.

She often carried world famous celebrities, film stars and politicans and it is known that Lee Harvey Oswald boarded the 'LIBERTE', possibly via the CALSHOT on 9th October 1959.
CALSHOT went north to the Clyde and ferried troops to and from both Queens.
She was based in Galway in Eire and used to ferry passengers from the liners 'MAASDAM' and 'RYNDAM' in the bay, to the pier harbour.

  Calshot Spit
Calshot Spit is a one mile long, sand and shingle bank located on the southern bank of the open end of Southampton Water on the south coast of England.
At the end of the spit are a castle, built by King Henry VIII, an RNLI lifeboat, a HM Coastguard station, several marine slips and a former Royal Navy and Royal Air Force flying boat station.
Its choice as a location for operating flying boats is clear: the landing area is sheltered by land on the three sides of Southampton Water and by the Isle of Wight, several miles away, on the fourth side.

Squadron Commander Longmore took over command at Calshot in January of 1914 and with his experience and that of other officers in the use of torpedoes and guns added the use of the seaplane into an offensive role to the reconnaissance trials that were being held at the time.
In 1938 Calshot was again preparing for hostilities, and the land at the spit was bought by the RAF and the beaches and beach huts closed.
Calshot was then responsible for the repair and maintenance of the flying boats and marine craft and for training the crews of the launches.

On the lighter wind days the Solent is an ideal cruising location with Calshot located quite centrally giving good sailing access to Lepe in the West, the second closest point to the Isle of White (3-4 minute blast beach to beach in a South Wester).
Calshot is one of the few spots on the south coast were you can sail in any northerly winds with north/north east winds coming straight in to the bay on the back side of the spit giving safe sailing, onshore winds and flat water blasting for around 4 hours during the high water period.

Two people were landed from one yacht and the lifeboat saved four others from the yacht On-y-va. The other two lifeboat crew members received individual Letters of Appreciation.

I think there was three to four.  There was two engineers, there was … there was greasers, there was firemen, there was ABs, there was mates, skippers, and there was stewards too for the lounge because we had a lounge.
When we used to do the tenders, the stewards and the assistant stewards from the Isle of Wight ferries at the time, and they were responsible for looking after the passengers that we bring aboard.
