Calshot   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Calshot was recognised by Henry's commissioners for forts as being of strategic importance and during the next 400 years there were many threats of invasion of the south coast and the castle was retained as a fully manned artillery outpost right up to the 20th century.
Though Calshot was a lonely station for the soldiers and their families who accompanied them, being an isolated part of the coastline, it was also a favourite haunt for smugglers as the shingle beaches and inlets were the ideal place for small ships to land and discharge their cargo of contraband.
In 1938 Calshot was again preparing for hostilities, and the land at the spit was bought by the RAF and the beaches and beach huts closed.
