Prince George's County was created in 1696 from portions of Charles and Calvert Counties, and a portion was detached in 1748 to form Frederick County.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 33.00% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 7.70% who are 65 years of age or older.

The county chose the site before federal wetlands regulations were enacted because of its proximity to existing roads and a commuter train station before federal wetlands regulations were enacted.
