Gotlieb, 76, is celebrating 40 years as chief curator for the Boston University Special Collections, a compendium of papers and artifacts from the attics, crates, and shoeboxes of 2,000 notables from Henry VIII to Sam Shepard, from Thomas Hardy to Marilyn Monroe.
Behind Gotlieb’s desk looms a striking portrait of Bette Davis, who hung the painting herself when she agreed, after a long courtship, to donate her 109,000 documents to BU.
Gotlieb says it broke his heart when he learned, for example, that the author Richard Condon (author of The Manchurian Candidate and Prizzi’s Honor) was switching from writing in longhand to a personal computer.

 Calvin "Kelly" Gotlieb
Back in World War II Calvin "Kelly" Gotlieb was part of a team of Canadians asked to design radio proximity fuses for artillery shells so they could be detonated when they were close to enemy aircraft.
In order for the project to be successful the team needed to launch shells at trajectories close to 90 degrees, an angle for which there were no range tables since most artillery was launched much closer to the curve of the earth.
Slow as progress was, Gotlieb was bang on with his own predictions about the benefits of computing for Canadian businesses.

Calvin Gotlieb's chapter, which argues against appeals to privacy, seems to build on Rule's by arguing that surveillance and control are not total.
Gotlieb says that in Canada and the U.S. people no longer value privacy as a social good, because they realize that there is a trade-off between divulging private information -- e.g., SIN and SSN numbers -- and obtaining various benefits that accrue from providing such information.
Regan's discussion of genetic surveillance, Marx's study of popular culture texts, Gotlieb's focus on the social construction of reality, and Poster's poststructural approach, for me, point to the diverse potential for studies of computers, surveillance, and privacy, and they encourage me to think of more.

Professor emeritus of computer science Calvin Gotlieb, the "Father of Computing in Canada" and a member of KMDI, supports this approach.
"Because of the spreading of computers in society," he says, "we need an interdisciplinary focus." In addition to bringing the first computer to Canada in the early 1950s, Gotlieb had the vision to create one of the first courses in the world in computers and society in 1973, which he is still teaching today.
With the speed at which research and applications in information technology are moving, this multidisciplinary focus that keeps the human and society at the centre of technology is absolutely essential to create better and more usable technology and to keep human values driving technological innovation, rather than the other way around.
