Rao first caught the attention of the world of statistics when in 1945 he put forward the "theory of estimation".
Rao Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao was born to C.D. Naidu and A.Laxmikantamma on 10 September 1920 in Huvvina Hadagalli in present day Karnataka.
Rao decided to pursue a research career in mathematics, but was denied a scholarship on the grounds of late submission of the application.

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, Holder of the Eberly Family Chair in Statistics and director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis, is acknowledged as one of the world's top five statisticians for his distinguished contributions to the theory and application of statistics and mathematics, both as a researcher and as a teacher.
Rao holds seven additional Honorary Fellowships in the Royal Statistical Society in the United Kingdom, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, King's College in the United Kingdom, the International Statistical Institute, the International Biometric Society, the Finnish Statistical Society, and the Calcutta Statistical Association.
Rao is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

A very early contribution, later to become famous as the Cramér-Rao inequality, was derived by him in 1943 (in a hard night's work in response to the question of a student, V.M. Dandekar, who later became one of India's leading economists).
Professor Rao's many contributions to theoretical statistics in general and multivariate analysis in particular arose from his involvement in the analysis of large data sets at the ISI, such as the Anthropometric Survey in 1941 in the United Provinces of India.

 Leading statistician attends international conference at University of Wollongong - Media @ UOW
One of the world's leading statisticians, Professor Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, is visiting the Illawarra this week for an international statistics conference being held at the University of Wollongong (UOW).
The International Conference on Statistics, Combinatorics and Related Areas and The Eighth International Conference of the Forum for Interdisciplinary Mathematics is being held at UOW from December 19 to 21.
Professor Rao was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from UOW yesterday, Monday 17 December.

In statistics, the Rao–Blackwell theorem describes a technique that can transform an absurdly crude estimator into an estimator that is optimal by the mean-squared-error criterion or any of a variety of similar criteria.
The theorem is named after Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao and David Blackwell.
The process of transforming an estimator using the Rao-Blackwell theorem is sometimes called Rao-Blackwellization.
