The strongest grounds for the first assumption are experimental transmission of the disease from patient to volunteer, the consistent relation between typical clinical lesions and the presence of Donovan bodies, and the disappearance of these bodies with successful antibiotic treatment.
Evidence for the identity of C. granulomatis with Donovan bodies rests on the close morphological similarity between the two; the isolation of C. granulomatis from typical and otherwise sterile lesions of donovanosis, and the demonstration, by complement fixation tests and immunofluorescence, respectively, that patients have high titres of specific antibody that react with both.
