This is one of the calypsos best known to rhe general public, thank to the versions recorded in the 1950s by Harry Belafonte and Robert Mitchum.
This calypso, sung for the first time by Lord Kitchener in 1963, is a perfect example of what Trinidadians mean by "double entente":lyrics full of bawdy allusions that require reading between the lines.

According to the latter sources, when the British arrived the name gradually evolved into calypsoe and took on the significance of the Greek goddess of the same name who enchanted men into swine and who is also reputed to have been responsible for the development of the folk song.
Due to its popularity, the calypso was incorporated into the French Carnival tradition in colonial society and from there the griot or chantuelle, renowned for his quick thinking and lyrical dexterity and vocal talent, evolved into the calypsonian.
