Terms calypso and kaiso used interchangeably in Trinidad, where 'Kaiso!' is often heard in calypso tents as patrons wish to show approval: probably comes from West African Hausa term which depending on context can mean regret, triumph, contempt, etc.
At the turn of the century patois gave way to English, people moved from tent to tent to see what was happening, audiences gathered at rehearsals and tents began to charge admission.
The first known calypso competition was '14, first national Calypso King contest '39; final of competition run by T&T government-run National Carnival Commission (NCC) at Dimanche Gras shows on Carnival Sunday nights from '58; on the inclusion of women contestants '78 the title changed to Calypso Monarch.

According to the latter sources, when the British arrived the name gradually evolved into calypsoe and took on the significance of the Greek goddess of the same name who enchanted men into swine and who is also reputed to have been responsible for the development of the folk song.
Due to its popularity, the calypso was incorporated into the French Carnival tradition in colonial society and from there the griot or chantuelle, renowned for his quick thinking and lyrical dexterity and vocal talent, evolved into the calypsonian.
In 1914 the first calypso record was made leading to relative commercial success and investment that would herald the dawn of the calypso tent in the 1920s.

One of the larger and more popular tents in the early 1940s was the Victory Calypso Tent which functioned at 95 Edward Street in Port-of-Spain; however, the most popular tent was The Original Old Brigade which also operated on Edward Street.
The name of the World's Fair Calypso Tent was changed in 1943 to the Commando Tent and featured Growling Tiger, Lord Beginner, Lord Caresser, and King Iere.

There seems to be no shortage of calypso tents to visit for Carnival 2006.
Apart from those tried and true tents like the Calypso Revue, Kaiso House and Calypso Spektakula, calypso tents have been popping up in various communities including the TUCO tent in Belmont which gives exposure to relatively unknown entertainers.
The tent's cast include veteran calypsonian Santa, Devica, Reporter, Texas Sippy, Lennox and St Vincent's Alla G. Also opening on February 2 is Nirmal "Massive" Gosine's Roving Chutney/ Calypso Comedy Tent which he calls a two in one.

He started singing calypso as a boy and got his first break in 1937 in a calypso tent in Arima, singing for 12 cents.
Kitchener composed the first "pan calypso" ("The Beat of the Steelband") in 1944 and formed an extremely close allegiance and affinity with pan and the steelband movement.
A true Calypso Pioneer and staunch advocate for the retention of traditional, pure calypso, and a strong objector to the hybrid soca, it was ironic that Kitchener's first attempt at recording a soca selection, "Sugar Bum Bum," would become his most successful single in terms of sales.

It's hard to remember when calypso had seen more controversy, excitement and popularity than the day David Michael Rudder stepped beyond his role as lead singer for the brass band Charlie's Roots and entered the calypso arena as an individual artist.
Prior to this event, a calypsonian would only dare to enter the competition with the blessings of elders (the established calypsonians who ruled the isolated world of the calypso tent circuit).
David then took a very conscious decision that this would be his last year in the calypso competition and instead turned his attention to charting an international career.

 David Rudder - Biography - AOL Music
One of the few calypso singers to write his own songs, David Rudder (born: David Michael Rudder) helped to usher in a new era for calypso music.
Rudder's 1990 album, 1990, was named "best calypso album of the year" at the first Caribbean Music Awards at the Apollo Theater in New York while the title track was named "song of the year" at the Nefeita Awards.
Throughout his teens, he sang backup vocals in a calypso tent run by Lord Kitchener.

A good place to start may be the Bacchanal Time calypso tent at the George Street Auditorium opened on the first of July.

Their only competition was another tent, organized by the Roaring Lion and Attilla, staffed with some of the Calypso giants of those days.
In 1967, Calypso Revue was reorganized with Kitch as the lead calypsonian, under Lord Melody's management, and was housed at The Legion Hall, just south of what is now known as Lara Promenade on Independence Square.
Melody left the tent after the 1968 season, and the management of the tent was taken over by Jazzy Pantin and his assistant Sonny Woodley.
