The Bay of Cam Ranh is one of the jewels of Vietnam.
The entire northern half of the eastern peninsula, which protected the bay from monsoon weather and seas, was a beehive of military logistical activity begining in 1966-67, and remained so for as long as the US was involved in the conflict.
Cam Ranh's assigned patrol areas extended from Phan Ri in the south to Vung Ro Bay in the north.

I was at Ubon on the flare mission at the time, but I had spent a couple of weeks shuttling out of Cam Ranh with a crew for an operation earlier in the year right after I got to Naha.
I believe my crew from Pope was the first to land on the PAP runway at Cam Ranh when we went in there with a load of wood on the way back to Mactan from Pope.
One gripe about Cam Ranh was that we had to eat in the chow hall and only drew standard per diem while the folks from Clark and Mactan were living offbase in Saigon and drawing half of the full per diem rate.
