LEGAZPI CITY - Police filed multiple murder cases against the five suspects in the massacre of a family of six, four of whom were children, in a remote village of Tumpa in Camalig, Albay.
Chief Inspector Rogelio Beraquit, Camalig town police chief, said the case was filed Monday afternoon by SPO1Romeo Villarasa at the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Legazpi City.
Beraquit said the case was filed after witnesses under Camalig police custody took a sworn affidavit.

CAMALIG, Albay: After implementing a suspension order for Mayor Jejomar Binay of Makati City, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) regional and provincial offices in Bicol also served yet another suspension order for the mayor of Camalig town here on Monday morning.
While the suspension order for Mayor Rommel Muñoz was issued by DILG Secretary Ronaldo V. Puno on October 9, the officers of the DILG Bicol, led by Blandino Maceda, the regional director, could not locate the whereabouts of Muñoz at the time.
The Comelec said that in view of the Supreme Court decision, the pendency of the case and the absence of a duly elected and proclaimed mayor of Camalig, the DILG was directed to let Moyo to temporarily assume the function of the office of the mayor pursuant to the provisions of the law.

Camalig was discovered by the Spanish in 1569 when a galleon led by Captain Luis Enriquez de Guzman was searching for food supplies needed by Legazpi's men in Panay.
Albay town was separated from Cagsawa in 1818, renamed Legazpi on September 22, 1856 and became a city in 1892.
Legazpi City was dissolved by the Americans in 1900 and merged with Daraga and the Albay district into a single municipality called Albay.

In 1574, at the height of the Spanish colonization of the islands, Guido de Lavizares mentioned in his letter to the King of Spain the land of ""Los Camarines"" — apparently referring to the area of what is now Camalig, Albay, where rice storehouses and granaries or “camarin” abound.
In 1636, Ibalon was split into two: Partido de Ibalon (comprising what is now Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Masbate, and the islands of Ticao and Burias) and Partido de Camarines (all towns north of present-day Camalig, Albay).
Naga City was the capital of Camarines Sur until June 6, 1955 when Pili, the adjoining town, was declared the Provincial Capital by virtue of R. The province celebrated its foundation anniversary, the 419th, for the very first time in May 27, 1998.

Streamers and placards condemned the killing as relatives, friends, media practitioners and cause-oriented groups in the region occupied a street leading to the Camalig parish church from Villanueva's residence in upland Barangay Tagaytay, about a kilometer from the town proper.
The cause-oriented groups represented were the Albay Movement for Justice and Peace, Bayan Muna and the Concerned Drivers and Operators for Reform, where Villanueva was a founding member when he was still a jeepney driver in 1979.
Residents of Camalig town lighted candles and put flowers on their altars as the whole town grieved for their martyred former vice mayor.

A veteran radio journalist was killed yesterday in Albay province while another broadcaster narrowly escaped death in an ambush in southern Davao City.
John Villanueva, 53, was riding home on his motorcycle to Camalig in Albay province from the office of radio station dzGB in Legazpi City when he was ambushed by several unidentified assailants on Monday around 7.30 pm, police said yesterday.
Villanueva, who was popularly known in Albay by his radio call sign "Jun V" and a former vice-mayor of Camalig, was known for his hard-hitting tirades against alleged corruption by local officials.
