Topic: Cambaroides

Cambaridae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most of the species in the family are native to North America east of the Great Divide, such as the invasive Procambarus clarkii, with fewer species living in East Asia and Japan, such as zarigani (Cambaroides japonicus).
The status of the genus Cambaroides remains unclear.

Initially, the study I had in mind involved resolving relationships among the North American Cambarid genera, and I am in the process of gathering specimens and data for this project.
However, I think that this project could easily be expanded to include representatives of all northern hemisphere crayfishes with the inclusion of species of Pacifastacus, Cambaroides and the European Astacids, if that is, other interested people are willing to send some tissue samples.
Resolution of species status questions for the European taxa (i.e., is the currently accepted taxonomy correct, or should additional species and genera be recognized, al la Starobogatov?).

We speculated that the observed displacement of Cambaroides by Pacifastacus is partly due to an interference interaction for shelter between the two species.
We studied the impacts of Pacifastacus on Cambaroides by testing experimentally whether intensity of interference, the outcome of dominance order and shelter occupancy differed between single- and mixed-species combinations of the two species.
Because shelter utilization, when these are not limited in supply, was much more frequent in Cambaroides than Pacifastacus, Cambaroides suffered interference from both conspecifics and heterospecifics when they competed for a single shelter.

The phylogenetic position of the four East Asian freshwater crayfish species of the genus Cambaroides is not settled.
The question of whether Cambaroides is monophyletic or paraphyletic has so far been neither addressed morphologically nor with molecular data sets.
Here we present the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of all four currently described species of Cambaroides in the framework of Northern Hemisphere freshwater crayfish (Astacoidea) relationships based on partial sequences of two mitochondrial genes (CO1 and 12S rRNA).

In eastern Hokkaido, an exotic crayfish species (locally known by the Japanese name utidazarigani; Pacifastacus leniusculus) is rapidly expanding its range while displacing the only native crayfish species (zarigani; Cambaroides japonicus) to Japan that is considered as 'endangered'.
In a previous study (1999), we investigated ecological roles of Pacifastacus and Cambaroides in an artificial stream community (N. Usio et al., work in progress).
We are currently investigating whether functional and trophic roles of Pacifastacus change according to their ontogenetic stages.
