The crossroads at the centre of Camberwell is the site of Camberwell Green, a very small area of common land which was once a traditional village green on which was held an annual fair of ancient origin which rivaled that of Greenwich.
The area is popular with students, as it is home to the Camberwell College of Arts (part of the University of the Arts London - formerly the London Institute) on Peckham Road.

The aim of the occupation is to keep the college running to allow and improve student access to resources, especially third year students who are preparing for their degree shows.

A Junior Art School (later known as the Secondary Art School) was established in 1920, providing preliminary training courses for students from the ages of 14 to 16 before moving to full-time senior courses.
In January 1986 the school became a constituent college of the London Institute, formed by the Inner London Education Authority associating its art schools and specialist colleges of printing, fashion and distributive trades into a collegiate structure.
In 1989 Camberwell was renamed Camberwell College of Arts, and the courses were organised into two schools, one of Applied and Graphic Arts and the other of Art History and Conservation.

So, I have recently been awarded a space in a place called Cockpit Arts (www.cockpitarts.com) in Clerkenwell, London, which is a space housing a collection of artist-makers all working in different areas of the applied arts.
There are still many for whom book art is a baffling and confusing medium in some ways, but that is being slowly eroded as the general art-buying public become more book art literate.
Teaching book art, which I do now at Camberwell (co-teaching with Karen Bleitz from Circle Press), is also an important influence, as you are forced to understand your material before imparting it to others.

Artist Simone ten Hompel won the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize on 26th September 2005 for "her contribution to metal work." The prize, worth £30,000, is presented annually in a partnership between the Crafts Council and Jerwood Charity.
Established as the Technical Institute on 10 January 1898, from the start Camberwell College of Arts aimed "to give the best artistic and technical education to all classes in the district", "supplement knowledge gained by craftsmen in workshops" and "help the craftsman become the designer of his own work".
The Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2005: Metal exhibition is currently on display at the Crafts Council Gallery, London from 8 September until 20 November 2005 before touring the UK.

The objectives for art history are appropriately matched by the content of the curriculum in both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The diversity of the MA curriculum is managed by the emphasis on contextualising the chosen topics within the 'history' of art, and by the structure and clear aims and objectives of the seminar programme and assessment structure.
The collection at Camberwell is comprehensive in the history of the graphic arts, but requires significant improvement in respect of the history of the decorative arts.
