Peru Change '90   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Cambio '90 only entered the Peruvian political spectrum in early 1990, but by June 1991 it was the most powerful political force in the nation.
Cambio's success hinged largely on the success of its candidate for the presidency, Alberto Fujimori, an agricultural engineer and rector of the National Agrarian University (Universidad Nacional Agrario--UNA) in Lima's La Molina District from 1984 to 1989.
Cambio's two main bases of support were the Peruvian Association of Small- and Medium-Sized Businesses (Asociación Peruana de Empresas Medias y Pequeñas--Apemipe) and the informal sector workers who associated their cause with Apemipe, and the evangelical movement.

However in the case of Cambio 90 confusion arises because of the class origins of their candidates, from the petty-bourgeoisie and medium bourgeoisie, and by hiding their pragmatic points, especially before the first run.
It already presented its detailed "conditions" to support Cambio 90, with phrasemongering to justify their "principles," while the poor orphan "Socialist Left" (IS) begs for crumbs off the big boys' table.

The victory of Fujimori and his Cambio '90 (Change '90) front was seen as a rejection of traditional politicians and parties, as well as of Vargas Llosa's proposed orthodox economic "shock" program.
Fujimori's success was also enhanced by his rather eclectic political team, Cambio '90, which was extremely active in campaigning at the grassroots level.
Cambio had an appeal at this level precisely because it was an unknown entity, and was not affiliated with the traditional political system.

P.O.V. - The Fall of Fujimori . The Rise of Alberto Fujimori | PBS
With the nation's political parties in disarray and growing popular resentment against the central government's effectiveness, the stage was set for the rise of political outsider Alberto Fujimori and his Cambio '90 coalition, which swept into power based on strong support from small business interests and evangelical Christian outreach.
Novelist and free-market liberal Mario Vargas Llosa won the most votes in the first round of national elections (28 percent to Fujimori's 24 percent), but with the support of APRA Fujimori won the second round with 57 percent of the vote to Vargas Llosa's 34 percent.
Cambio's support was contingent on opposition to its more conservative political rivals (such Vargas Llosa), however, and once Fujimori took office the coalition fractured.

As a result of Cambio 90's successful strategy, four senators, 13 deputies, and the second vice president, all identified as evangelicals, were swept into office.

 Alberto Fujimori Summary
Two years before the 1990 general election, Fujimori and several other politically independent professionals and businessmen founded the Cambio 90 (Change 90) movement as a vehicle for their participation in the contest.
The Cambio 90 candidate proposed to undercut support for the insurgents through economic development and to wean peasants away from the cultivation of coca (the source of cocaine) with a program of crop substitution.
A dark horse candidate, Fujimori won the 1990 presidential election with his new party Cambio 90 ("cambio" meaning "change"), beating the world-renowned writer Mario Vargas Llosa in a surprising upset.

CBS News | Peru Claims Fujimori Seeking Re-Election
Fujimori has vowed to return to Peru to run for re-election in next April's elections, despite the charges against him and a standing congressional ruling, upheld by Peru's Constitutional Tribunal, prohibiting him from holding public office until February 2011.
The document Fujimori signed on Wednesday showed he was creating an alliance between his support group, Si Cumple, and two other political parties: Cambio 90 and Nueva Mayoria, Matallana said.
The move is aimed at allowing the three groups to present candidates on one list, but Peruvian officials in Tokyo said the ban would stop Fujimori from taking a leadership position in the alliance.
