Khmer, or Cambodian, is spoken by some 7 million people and is the official language of Cambodia where 90 percent of the population--about 6 million people--speaks it as a first or second language.
Khmer is a language that is devoid of inflection in either nouns or verbs; this type of language is sometimes referred to as isolating.
Khmer is the national and official language of Cambodia and is used in the media, taught in the schools at all levels (with some exceptions in higher educational institutions), used in government administration, in the judiciary, and in most social, everyday, contexts.

Most Cambodians, on the other hand, kept their children away from Franco-Cambodian schools, perhaps to minimize contact with the children of Vietnamese immigrants, whom they disliked and distrusted (Forest, 1980; Osborne, 1969), or perhaps simply out of resistance to French innovations.
As a result of Cambodian attachment to traditional education and resistance to Franco-Cambodian schools and their language and educational policies, in the first few decades of the 20th century Franco-Cambodian schools reached only a limited student population.
Indeed, the significant increase in Cambodian educational participation after the turn of the 20th century almost certainly contributed to the rise in Cambodian administrative participation relative to that of the Vietnamese by the late 1930s (Chandler, 1993).

The Khmer (Cambodian) language   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Khmer is the national language of Cambodia, and has a written tradition going back at least 1400 years, and as such has a special, if problematic, place in comparative AA linguistics.
The native lexicon is recognisably MK, although the etymological analysis is complicated by the fact that extensive and prolonged language contact saw a lot of borrowing occur, and often the identification of borrowing, or even the direction of that borrowing, is difficult or impossible.
Because there were continued borrowings into the language, and spellings were not always uniform or etymological, various inconsistencies crept into this system, and over time additional conventions were adopted to cope with this.
