| | The Khmer (Cambodian) language (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06) |
 | | Khmer is the national language of Cambodia, and has a written tradition going back at least 1400 years, and as such has a special, if problematic, place in comparative AA linguistics. |
 | | The native lexicon is recognisably MK, although the etymological analysis is complicated by the fact that extensive and prolonged language contact saw a lot of borrowing occur, and often the identification of borrowing, or even the direction of that borrowing, is difficult or impossible. |
 | | Because there were continued borrowings into the language, and spellings were not always uniform or etymological, various inconsistencies crept into this system, and over time additional conventions were adopted to cope with this. |
