		Cambridge Circus is a comedy revue that played in London in 1963.
		Unfortunately the title sometimes confused audiences, as it was not actually playing at Cambridge Circus itself.
		Jonathan Lynn later joined the cast when Chris Stuart-Clark left comedy to become a schoolteacher.

	Cambridge Footlights \|\| history
		After five Cambridge performances The Socialist, a 'musical satire', with a cast of 46, did a charity matinee at the Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, in aid, according to the programme, of the 'Anti-Socialist Union'.
		The Cambridge Arts Theatre opened in early 1936, paid for by J M Keynes, Fellow of King's, and controlled by a Trust 'which is fully representative of the Town and the University'.
		The 1963 Cambridge Circus (originally in Cambridge called A Clump of Plinths) went on to York, and then was brought to London by the young producer Michael White, first for five weeks at the New Arts Theatre Newport Street and then for three months at the Lyric Shaftesbury Avenue.

		The brilliance of his writing, the dominant nature of his performances (due largely to his extraordinary height) and the variety of his successes have made him undoubtedly the most influential figure of this group.
		Following the success of Cambridge Circus, the Cambridge University Footlights Club revue to which he contributed and which toured Britain and the World between 1963 and 1965, Cleese made his first big impact on television by writing and performing sketches on David Frost's The Frost Report (BBC).
		The overall impact and influence of Monty Python's Flying Circus is difficult to overestimate.

		Sketch comedy has its origins in vaudeville and music hall, where a large number of brief but humorous acts were strung together to form a larger program.

		The supremely silly John Cleese, star of Monty Python's Flying Circus, is co-author of two books on psychology, and a lawyer with a legal degree from an institution no less esteemed than Cambridge University.

		He went to Repton public school and Emmanuel, Cambridge where he joined the Footlights, performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1962, and in Cambridge Circus (1963), which went on to tour London and New York.

	Jonathan Lynn
		Jonathan Lynn is better known as a stage, screen, and television director than as an actor.
		Following his education at Pembroke, Lynn joined the Cambridge Circus satirical revue in the mid-'60s.
		The feature films Lynn directed were primarily comedies and of average or slightly better quality, though he did have a major hit with My Cousin Vinny (1994).
