Football - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Whilst local rules for athletics and some other sports with simple rules could be easily understood by visiting schools, it was nearly impossible for schools to play each other at football as each school played by their own idiosyncratic rules.
How long this set of rules lasted is unclear, but by 1866, when Sheffield played a combined FA side, they were employing their own version of offside that differed from the FA rule.
Australian Rules is sometimes said to be the first form of football to be codified but — as was the case in all kinds of football at the time, there was no official body supporting the rules — and play varied from one club to another.

Talk:Football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cambridge rules (which formed the basis of the FA rules) were drawn up in Cambridge in 1848.
For sure these rules could be said to be ancestral to all subsequent games, but they definitely favour the kicking game, but they are a bit of a distraction as far as the Association game is concerned as the rules of Thring and other people at Cambridge were used by the FA.
And although their rules were not officially codified until 1870, it is a very old game and this adds some weight to the idea that it was an Irish tradition to have players from both teams roaming freely on a playing field.

Australian rules football - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Australian rules football (also known as Aussie Rules) is a game played between two teams of 18 players, generally played on cricket ovals during the winter months.
The 1859 rules did not include some elements which soon became important to the game, such as the requirement to bounce the ball while running, and Melbourne's game was not immediately adopted by neighbouring clubs.
However, State of Origin rules were introduced in 1977, and in the first such game, at Subiaco Oval in Perth, Western Australia defeated Victoria, 23.13 (151) to 8.9 (57), a huge reversal of the results in most previous games between these states.

Academics at Cambridge are warning that restrictive new intellectual property rules proposed by the university could mean an end to the high-tech boom that gave rise to the nickname "Silicon Fen".
Currently, Cambridge researchers keep the rights to their ideas unless they are generated in the course of sponsored research.
Cambridge's IP rules are similar to the liberal regimes at the Massachussetts Institite of Technology and Stanford -- on which the current Cambridge policy was based in the 1980s -- both of which have spun out a large number of high-tech companies.

 Computerizing a Cambridge Tradition
Cambridge will need to weigh the value of maintaining a community tradition of hand-counting that is important to many people versus the delay and citizen misunderstanding of the process that comes with the hand-count.
Even without new machines, a computer program could reduce invalid ballots by slightly modifying the rules to allow "x" voting, as described in the report -- a computer program can deal with the counting complexities that come with "x" votes (which are treated as tie votes) much more easily than is possible in a hand-count.
Such a trend could be good for Cambridge, both for strengthening its voters' confidence in the system and in removing whatever burden the city might have in using an "exotic" voting system.

Geographic patterns of economic activity, some of which arise as a result of contingent historical events, determine the patterns of comparative advantage that in turn determine patterns of trade.
Eichengreen (1996) showed, for example, that the emergence of international monetary systems, such as the classical gold standard of the late nineteenth century, was path dependent.
Puffert (2003) has argued that path dependence in institutions is likely to be similar to path dependence in technology, as both are based on the value of adopting a common practice -- some technique or rule -- that becomes costly to change.

The Cambridge (1848), Sheffield (1857), Uppingham (1862) and the then newly formed Football Association of 1863, all had slightly different laws (or rules as they were better known in those days).
Following the evolution of the various rules used in the English public schools, the next stage of the development of the Laws belongs to Universities, particularly the Cambridge University, where young men were already versed in the particular football traditions of their own previous schools.
It was the eventual official merger of the rules of the Sheffield and The Football Association in 1878 that provided the standard platform for the growth of the game worldwide.
