The Cambridge Union Society, commonly referred to simply as the Cambridge Union, is a private debating society in Cambridge, England and is the largest society at the University of Cambridge.
The Cambridge Union was founded on February 13th, 1815 as a union of three debating societies and quickly rose to prominence in University life.
The society is not open to the general public; however, members are often able to bring guests to certain functions and some events are made available to the public for free or through the purchase of a ticket.

 Cambridge Independent Podcast
It has been a couple of months since our last podcast, and what with submissions drying up, and both Matt and I facing dissertation deadlines, finals and then the rest of our lives (hopefully spent outside of Cambridge), it seems that the podcast is now on an indefinate hiatus.
We got a lot of listeners, a lot of media attention, and we had a lot of fun, but our wider hopes of fleshing out the still-divided music scene in Cambridge were never fulfilled.
Luckily there are still people with the time and energy to help try and make this happen - including a number of other Cambrige podcasts and websites like cambridgebands.com, a task for which I applaud them, and wish them the best of luck.

 Education | Cambridge courts controversy with union invites
The Cambridge Union Society has sparked anger among academics and students by inviting two of the most controversial men in Britain into its debating chamber.
Defending the decision, Shaphur Kabraji, president elect of the union, which is the university's biggest student debating group with 4,000 members, said he felt the society had "a duty to hold this debate" as it was a question being asked around the world.
He argued the union was "not proving a point about freedom of speech", particularly because speakers had to abide by its rules, and could be silenced by the audience.

That's the question posed by WPI's Legal and Social Issues Group and the Cambridge Union Society as they debate the proposition, "This house believes that Britain should be the 51st State." This debate is part of the Campus Center Opening Ceremonies, and will take place on Wednesday, March 28, at 8 p.m.
The Cambridge Union Society is a college debating society in England that was founded in 1815 by an amalgamation of three college debating societies after, in the words of the Society, "a drunken brawl involving the three club's members." The Society has grown in influence ever since.
Two students from the Cambridge Union Society and two WPI students will form one team that debates the proposition in the affirmative, and the other four will debate the negative.

After conquering the haggis, a couple of us decided we could take on anything, even a law debate at the Cambridge Union Society of which we are all fortunate to be members.
The rest of the room is divided in half by a space that is two sword lengths in width (according to Dr. O’Shaughnessy this is the traditional width between opposing sides in a debate hallÂ…I was relieved I didn’t observe any swords in the crowd this night).

Students at the University of Arkansas appear to be less than enthusiastic about the chancellor, if the opinions of those in attendance at a public debate Tuesday night are any indication.
The Arkansas Union Society, the UA's first serious student debate team since 1985, held the first in its series of public debates Tuesday on the Fayetteville campus.

For much of the Society's history, women were not permitted to be members of the Society or even speak in a debate and this article from 1928 reports on one of many failed attempts to gain increased rights for women.
It wasn't until 1946 that a woman was first allowed to speak during a debate and women weren't permitted to become members of the Society until the 1960s.
Today, however, the Society warmly welcomes all Cantabrigians into its diverse membership.
