Cambridge Folk Festival - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cambridge Folk Festival is renowned for its eclectic mix of music and a wide definition of what might be considered folk.
In autumn 1964 Cambridge City Council, England, decided to hold a music festival the next summer and asked Ken Woollard, a local firefighter and socialist political activist, to help organise it.
It is often said that the main "folk" aspect of the festival is the audience, not the performers.

For the first time, the festival’s main sponsor is Radio 2, a choice that clearly rankles with some festival goers we speak to, but it's usually more to do with the commercial beer tents than anything musical.
Folk and traditional music have had a renaissance lately and, although the festival still refuses to embrace the more avant-garde developments in it, like folktronica for example, it is far from being a ‘beer, beards and bells’ affair.
Their blend of traditional folk melody and meter, with modern narratives, is a refreshing blend and they prove that their Radio 2 Award for best live act last year was well-deserved.

The Thistle & Shamrock Newsletter Article: The Cambridge Folk Festival
The festival organizers adhere to a very broad definition of what might be considered 'folk' and, in recent years, the festival has included a selection of country, blues, roots, bluegrass, gospel, cajun, zydeco, jazz, world and klezmer music, as well as the odd pop-star thrown in for good measure.
Cambridge Folk Festival refutes such criticism and demonstrates that there are aspects of English culture which continue to thrive and develop.
It is a credit to the festival that most of the artists are booked to perform several times during the weekend, enabling you to see everything that you want, and encouraging an atmosphere in which artists and punters feel part of a shared experience.

John Martyn, on the other hand, sings the actual lyrics of his songs in such a mumbledee rough way that they become a part of the overall "sound" and are impossible to transcribe, should you ever want to.
Live in Concert at the Cambridge Folk Festival, 1985 highlights this aspect of Martyn's performance, and displays at the same time just how that overall sound has captured the hearts and minds of his fans through his long career.
The discovery of the echoplex and electric guitar, and the manipulation of his voice as a key part of the sound (as opposed to simple guitar accompanied singing) changed Martyn from another folk-singer to England's purest bluesman.

The Cambridge Folk Festival may be 41 years old, but has flourished by constantly widening its scope; this year, it included music from America (country, pop, blues and gospel), Scotland and Ireland, Mali, Canada, and, of course, the latest English folk revival.
Kate Rusby's new album, out next month, shows her development as a songwriter, and for this preview she was joined by a band that included fiddle and accordion, and a brass section from the Coldstream Guards.
There was more experimental fusion of brass and the English tradition from Bellowhead, in which John Spiers and Jon Boden were joined by brass, percussion, cello, guitar and fiddles in an entertaining, theatrical 11-piece band that veered between dance tunes, music hall and experimental jazz settings.

As if to prove that folk festivals these days are not dominated by chunky hand-knitted sweaters and singers with a finger in their ear, Skye's Peatbog Faeries roared into town with their exciting mix of traditional tunes overlaid with modern electric dance music.
