Cambridgeshire police was today cleared of any serious errors affecting the outcome of its investigation into the disappearance of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.
In a separate report from the Bichard inquiry, HM Inspector of Constabulary, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, did criticise the force for "a lack of focus and coordination" at the start of the investigation, and he said the chief constable, Tom Lloyd, should have returned from his holiday earlier.
"The chief constable of Cambridgeshire constabulary readily accepts that his continued absence on leave during the early part of the investigation was an error, but it is also important to note that his absence did not lead to any loss of evidence or impair the investigation," he said.

Found drowned in the River Ouse on 16 February 1842, after going missing from his beat in the early hours of 23 December 1841, when it was suspected he was assaulted by several persons and thrown off a bridge into the river.
Both officers died as a result of injuries received on 15 November when the police car in which they were travelling together to a Special Constabulary Conference was in a head-on collision with an armoured car at Melbourn.
Killed in a road traffic accident whilst reporting for duty at Thorpe Wood police station, when his motor scooter was in collision with a bus outside the station.
