Civil War Battle History of The Canden Expedition in Arkansas
In what became the standard procedure during the Camden Expedition, the Confederate cavalry attacked, the Federals brought up units to drive the Confederates back, the Confederates withdrew, regrouped, and started again.
The supply base of Camden was forty miles away, on the Ouachita River.
Camden did not have enough food to feed 12,000 very hungry soldiers, their supply animals, or the numerous speculators, refugees and other hangers-on an army always accumulates.

The story of the four days of fighting on Prairie De Ann is a part of the story of the expedition of the Union forces into Southern Arkansas in the spring of 1864.
The Confederates evidently expected them to choose the last of these three routes, because it was on the western and the southern edges of the prairie that they had spent most of their labor in building fortification.

There were occasional expeditions into the country in the vicinity of Helena, in which the regiment participated for the purpose of watching the movements of the enemy, of whose approach there were constant rumors.
The brigade commanded by General Rice, during the expedition to Camden and until after the battle of Jenkins' Ferry, consisted of the Twenty-ninth and Thirty-third Iowa, the Fiftieth Indiana and the Ninth Wisconsin Regiments of Infantry.
The official reports show that the total casualties sustained by the Thirty-third Iowa of the Camden expedition, resulting directly from conflict with the enemy, were one hundred thirty-three, but to this list must be added the number who died of were discharged for disability incurred from the hardships and exposure endured upon that expedition.

The principal details of the intended expedition had been fully considered, and in a great measure arranged, in the Colonial department, before the application was made to Park; and he had therefore flattered himself that the business was in a state of considerable forwardness.
In the course of Park's communications with the Colonial Office, Lord Camden had intimated a desire to be furnished with a written statement of Park's opinions, both as to the plan of the expedition, and the particular objects towards which he conceived that his attention ought to be chiefly directed during the intended journey.
For some time nothing farther was heard of the expedition; but in the course of the year 1806 unfavourable accounts were brought by the native traders from the interior of Africa to the British settlements on the coast; and it was currently reported, but upon no distinct authority, that Park and his companions were killed.

It was a trying ordeal to the undisciplined and untried militia and marines, but they exhibited the resolute courage of the American soldier.
The Bagaduce expedition was such a subject of obloquy and remark that the General Court appointed a committee of investigation into the cause of its failure.
The total cost of the expedition is said to have been £1,739,174:11s.4d., and it came at a time when the finances of the colonies were at a very low ebb, and there was very little prospect of the independence of the country.
