Although they weren't called bowls, many other post-season games were played during the early 1930s to raise money for various charitable efforts that had been established to raise money for the growing number of unemployed.
Among them were the Cigar Bowl in Tampa, the Camellia Bowl in Lafayette, Louisiana, the Delta Bowl in Memphis, the Dixie Bowl in Birmingham, the Great Lakes Bowl in Cleveland, the Harbor Bowl in San Diego, the Oil Bowl in Houston, the Raisin Bowl in Fresno, and the Salad Bowl (!) in Phoenix.
The important difference is that the Rose Bowl is part of the BCS and the Big Ten and/or Pac 10 champion will be allowed to forego the Rose Bowl to play in the BCS championship game, if ranked first or second in the nation.

This 7 piece set of Hocking Coronation Handled Berry Bowls in Royal Ruby is priced as if it includes only 5 small bowls because the large bowl and one small bowl are not perfect.
Five of the 4.5" bowls are all perfect; the sixth has rough spots on the rim from the manufacturing process (I looked under the loop and these aren't chips, it's from the mold).
The large 8" bowl has a small rim chip, not really noticeable because of the color (I couldn't even get a picture).

At the time, an NCAA rule stated that an athlete must transfer with 48 semester or 72 quarter hours to be eligible to compete in postseason.
This rule made it nearly impossible for JC transfers to compete in bowl contests.
