Camelot In Four Colors, Part 5
Mark Twain's familiar satirical story, which has also known numerous film adaptations, describes the adventures of a 19th century American transported to the days of Camelot.
The film story tells of the adventures of Kayley, daughter of a late Knight of the Round Table, who joins with a young blind hermit, a two-headed dragon, and others to find the lost sword Excalibur and save Camelot from the renegade knight Ruber.
The latter work was adapted into the musical play Camelot by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe.

 Review: Camelot
Camelot was directed by Joshua Logan, a filmmaker who tackled a number of musicals (including a lackluster South Pacific), but was twice nominated for an Oscar as Best Director for dramas: 1955's Picnic and 1957's Sayonara.
Camelot represents the only time the Vulgate Cycle has been used as the backstory for a musical, and, despite a host of minor flaws, the film represents a sporadically enjoyable, if overlong, spectacle.
Camelot didn't go before the cameras until 1965, and, by the time filming was underway, none of the original Broadway trio was involved in the production.

Richard III Society--Wood Symposium, Kevin Harty
Films about Arthur have concentrated on several predictable themes: the quest for the Grail, the idea that Arthur is once and future king, and the Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot love triangle.
The British ITV 1991 version of the poem directed by John Michael Phillips, however, decided that the court of Camelot should be peopled by an array of younger members, further to emphasize the greenness of the Round Table in yet another sense of the word.
Other literary works at least allow for a tradition of middle or even old age among the principals, and films have generally taken their cues from these literary works.

Of course, since Camelot was produced to be a reserved seat spectacle, it's not surprising that so much effort was invested in perfecting the film's look.

Quest for Camelot tells the tale of Kayley (Jessalyn Gilsig speaking, Andrea Corr singing), a young girl who dreams of being a knight of the round table in Camelot, just like her father, Sir Lionel (Gabriel Byrne).
It's too bad that most of the newcomers, such as Warner Brothers' Quest for Camelot, concentrate more on replicating the Disney formula of story elements, and less on the overall quality of animation.

 Camelot (1967)
CAMELOT is far from a perfect film or even a perfect musical.
CAMELOT is, of course, the story of King Arthur (Richard Harris), his Queen, Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave), and Sir Lancelot (Franco Nero), the best and brightest knight of Arthur's treasured Round Table.
To Arthur's infinite sorrow, his queen and love falls hard--irrevocably so--for his friend and ally, and he is forced to choose between indulging the hatred that overwhelms him as a man, and the nobility that accompanies his stature as a king.

The Film Tribune - Camelot (1967)
In Camelot, the Round Table is eventually destroyed because of internal factions and selfish attitudes, and King Arthur must witness the death of his ideal when his own knights, who had earlier shared this ideal with him, demand revenge against their oppressors.
Camelot would turn out to be his penultimate assignment.
Therefore, much of Camelot's costume design and set decoration, by John Truscott and Edward Carrere, are anachronistic and inappropriate.

Camelot, in both its stage and film manifestations, therefor, became like A Connecticut Yankee, a demonstration of the taste of the times in which it was written.
Musical comedies were meant to be upbeat and fast-paced, with distinctive musical numbers in a popular style, and Rodgers and Hart provided some of the best examples of the genre.
In additon to new musical numbers, the libretto was updated so that all three of the principals were in the armed forces, thus paying homage to the then-current war effort.

The Selena phenomenon provides an interesting counterimage to the inescapably persistent images of JFK Jr., the son of Camelot, and offers another take on the diversity issue, which is continually cast in black and white.
But the story of Selena is much more complex than any of the previous films have shown.
Part of the Selena phenomenon included the complete ignorance of the mainstream (including middle-class Latinos), who were not only surprised at the reaction to the singer's death, but asked, "Who's Selena?" -- as if to say, since we don't know who she is, she must not exist, or, she must not matter.

DVD Review - The Iron Giant
After "Quest For Camelot", and "The King And I", Warner Home Video is now presenting another one of their animated feature films - "The Iron Giant", the surprise family hit of the summer that packed everything that is good and beloved in animated movies into a colorful and energetic spectacle.
Vin Diesel lent his voice to the gentle giant and although he is not actually saying very much in the film, the guttural noises he makes ultimately turn the robot into a thinking and emotional character that learns humanity.
At the same time the film is highly reminiscent to classic B-horror and science fiction movies of the ‘50s like Jack Arnold’s "It Came From Outer Space" or "Forbidden Planet", which is incidentally featured on numerous occasions throughout the film in animated form.

Although the film manages to discuss the question of "civilization", which most films of its type would have left aside, I cannot recommend it, simply, as plainly put as possible, because it is boring, mostly because of the handling.
It would be normal for the director of a low budget film to spend most of the footage on close-ups of the protagonists because he would have little else of interest to show.
The character of Mordred, who should be a staple in every film based on Arthurian legends, only appears when audiences are already two hours into the film, and his role is limited to creating tension that would have erupted anyway because of the relationship between Lancelot and Guenevere.

Through this film, it became clear that what Arthur, Guinevere and Camelot really represented was our historic, spiritual search for the Garden of Eden, our search for real parents, and our vision of the world in which we wish to live.
Second, traditional films have usually portrayed Guinevere as a minor character who is easily swayed by men; a woman without fortitude, guts, or commitment.
More importantly, this film shows clearly how this vision was destroyed-that is the power the immoral love has to destroy.

The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come.
