Er zijn twee ondersoorten: de huiskameel (Camelus bactrianus bactrianus) en de wilde kameel (Camelus bactrianus ferus).
De huiskameel is een zeer algemene soort, die veelvuldig gehouden wordt en regelmatig in dierentuinen te zien is. De wilde kameel daarentegen is ernstig bedreigd, en komt enkel voor in kleine populaties in de steppen en halfwoestijnen van China en Mongolië.

We mostly think of Camels living in the Middle East and Sahara region of N Africa, but this particular camel was a slight surprise to me in where it lives and the fact that it has 2 humps and found only in this region.
