Geologists tell us that at times Cameron Parish had been the bed of the Gulf of Mexico; at other times, it was far inland with the coastline much farther to the south than it is at present.
With the warming trend and the inundation of coastal regions caused by melting ice, Cameron was again submerged by the Gulf waters.

The area is bounded by the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway on the north, Calcasieu Lake and Calcasieu Pass on the west, Louisiana Highway 27, Little Chenier Ridge, and Little Chenier Canal on the east, and the Gulf of Mexico and Mermentau River on the south.
Because of severe saltwater intrusion, marshlands in the area were converting to open water as the saltwater killed the vegetation that stabilized the marsh soils.

The idea for the Louisiana Fur and Wildlife Festival in Cameron was originated in 1955 by the late Congressman T. Thompson who represented the area.
She was presented with a nutria stole, a bouquet of roses by the Cameron Service Garage, and an expense paid trip to the National Outdoors Show in Cambridge, Maryland.
Ted O'Neal told the audience (a Cameron Elementary full house) that night, that "Nutria skins are saving what would have been a vanishing fur industry for this area." He also pointed out that in the previous year Cameron Parish trappers netted $400,000.
