As in most Castlevania games your main weapon is a whip, which can be changed by the DSS which I will explain later, and you can also use a sub-weapon by hitting up + the attack button.

While the early chapters in the series occasionally toyed with nonlinear gameplay, it wasn't until Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was released for the PlayStation that Konami really found a way to expand the series beyond a collection of relatively simple action games.
Camilla has successfully resurrected Count Dracula yet again, and it's up to Nathan Graves and the father and son team of Morris and Hugh Baldwin to stop the evil vampire.
Like any good Castlevania protagonist, Nathan comes equipped with a whip, and he can pick up and use the same classic secondary weapons from the rest of the series, such as a dagger, holy water, a time-stopping watch, and an ax.

The story is that Camilla, one of Dracula’s most loyal assistants, is in the midst of bringing the vampire himself back to life.
Despite its departure from the original Castlevania layout, Circle of the Moon kept one Castlevania constant: The sub-weapons, which are found in lanterns and powered through hearts which are also found in lanterns.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (commonly abbreviated CotM) is a video game created by Konami for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance system.
The gameplay in Circle of the Moon is similar to that of other post-Symphony of the Night Castlevania titles, in which the player must explore a gigantic castle filled with undead enemies and evil aberrations in a non-linear fashion.
However, they arrived a few seconds too late since Camilla, a minion of Count Dracula, had already started the rite to revive her master.

Monsters At Play: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Review
The play mechanics in Castlevania II remain largely unchanged from the first game, which means they're still clunky and unwieldy when compared to modern games.
This makes the game much more player-friendly at the cost of difficulty; Castlevania II is a much easier game than its predecessor, and there is little incentive to play conservative and treasure each life.
Fusing Castlevania with RPG elements proved to be a smart move back in 1988, and this experiment paved the way for future cross-genre Castlevania titles.

"CASTLEVANIA: CIRCLE OF THE MOON"/ a game review from Christian Spotlight
Anybody who has played a "Castlevania" game should be familiar with "COTM", which is a side-scrolling action/adventure with your main weapon being a whip with which you defeat enemies.
"Castlevania: Circle of the Moon" is rated "T" for "teen".
The Castlevania series are born from the Dracula stories and media, and therefore if they do not offer such "occultic" (note the quotes), the game will be very much off course from what it is designed to represent.

Gamebits: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Instead of progressing through defined stages, Nathan can explore Dracula's castle freely, similar to the gameplay in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for PlayStation, or even the older Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.
Castlevania's play is balanced, avoiding the extremes of boringly easy and frustratingly difficult, unlike too many other games.
Castlevania's visuals include scrolling backgrounds with the occasional window to let the moonlight cast its circle, while detailed foregrounds depict libraries, chapels, and dungeons.

One thing I’ve always liked about Castlevania is the music, and Circle of the Moon mixes new and classic tracks that’ll make all you old-school Castlevania fans drool like dogs on pork chop night.
Sound effects are equally good; the crack of Nathan’s whip, the echo of his shoes as he walks against the castle floor, even the screams of dying enemies (which are rather disturbing)… all get an A+.
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is most definitely my favorite Game Boy Advance launch game and probably one of the best games ever made for a handheld.

Morris is abducted by Camilla and Dracula for use in the ceremony to restore Dracula’s power.
Unfortunately, that sound quality goes a bit to waste when you consider only three songs in Circle of the Moon are original, and the remixes don’t live up to their original versions.

Camilla, who was born in Styria, was famous for her seemingly impossible propensity to retain her youth and beauty.
In her more uneventful series' appearances, she acted as a boss in Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (as the floating "Vampira" mask, or, at least, as its controller) and as the noted Skull Sorceress (the female occupant riding the actual skull) in Dracula X: Rondo of Blood.
In Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, which is placed eight years before, things are bit less clear: This is, it seems, "Dracula" because it acts as the first form in the final two-part battle.
