Topic: Camille (1921 film)

  Camille
Camille is the name of several films based on the 1852 novel and play La Dame aux camélias[?] by Alexandre Dumas, fils.
Like the novel, the films tell the story of gay romance in Paris in the 1840s, and one young woman who wins the heart of a wealthy young man, but gives him up for his own good.
A 1921 version was adapted by June Mathis[?] and directed by Ray C. Smallwood[?].

Film historians believe that he was primarily responsible for the 1921 financial disaster The Girl From God's Country.
By 1950, four films she directed had been released: Not Wanted, a hard-hitting drama about unwed mothers; Never Fear, about polio-stricken dancer; Outrage, which chillingly portrayed rape and its consequences and; Hard, Fast and Beautiful, in which a girl is forced into a pro tennis career by her domineering mother.

His loose trilogy comprised of Sei Personaggi in Cerca D'autore (1921), Ciascuno a Suo Modo (1924), and Questa Sera Si Recita a Soggeto (1930) predicted the theatre of the absurd, poised as it was on the precipice of the modernist threshold.
Known for his infatuation with narrative (to the extent that his films average three hours in length and have lasted all the way up to thirteen), Rivette's films are luxurious and observant exercises in witnessing the play, the maker as the middle degree of Lacan's three degrees of awareness.
It is structured so playfully that it doesn't appear to be structured at all--until a finale that brings all the players to one lovingly crafted environment and a series of mellifluous epiphanies wherein the dread symmetry of all that has come before blooms into one of the most satisfying cinematic experiences of the year.

Camille: Introductory Remarks by Brian Taves
In addition to her films, Nazimova became the first of the movie queens to establish a virtual Hollywood court at her home (later known as "the Garden of Alla"), largely of emigres, who were dedicated in many different ways to the art of the cinema.
CAMILLE, distributed by Metro, was her last film for a studio; she selected the property, and the scenario for this modern-day version of the Alexandre Dumas fils classic was written by June Mathis (1892-1927).
CAMILLE succeeds as an example of the art film, and yet one that also retains the fundamental elements of melodrama that appeals to audiences, successfully melding both aspects in a manner that the more avant-garde Nazimova-Rambova collaborations do not achieve.

The 1936 Garbo film is a classic and a beautiful movie, but this is a role many actresses long to tackle—Garbo’s film was at least the 11th cinematic version of the Dumas story.
She was an early fan of motion pictures, and had publicly announced her desire to film movies as early as 1912—an unusual ambition for a stage star of her day, and one she would fulfill in 1916, when movie producers first cast her in the film War Brides.
Camille, her only picture in 1921, was her 11th film, and she was becoming a well-known screen personality thereafter.

Her film career began with the silent film War Brides (1916) and continued through such movies as Camille (1921) and culminated in The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1944).
But her film career finally dried up, not only because of the spectacular failure of Salomé, but also because of the formation of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America in 1922, which was to institute the infamous Motion Picture Production Code in 1929, and the rise of the studio system.

These discs also include highly watchable photo montages; artfully edited stills from these films pay homage to the star's famed beauty.
Though most of Garbo's films were "adult" in nature, they are by today's standards pretty tame indeed.
And though Garbo never made another film after 1941's ill-fated "Two-Faced Woman," instead moving to New York to "be alone" and becoming famously reclusive, this DVD set conveys the power of a great star who could play larger-than-life heroines and even queens, rendering most of today's screen ladies positively plebian.
