deseretnews.com - Movie review: Camille Claudel | Deseret Morning News Web edition
"Camille Claudel" is many things, from fairly typical movie biography to critical examination of a particular historical period to portrait of an obsessed woman.
And that is the key to "Camille Claudel," with Isabel Adjani simply stunning as she portrays her character's gradual disintegration.
"Camille Claudel" is rated R for nudity, mostly models posing for the sculptured pieces by Claudel and Rodin, along with a couple of sex scenes, some violence and a single spoken profanity.

This movie dramatically tells the story of a colonial country struggling to come to terms with its own independence, without slipping from the 1st world to the 3rd, by focusing on a westerner's view of family and love.

While just about every aspect of this movie is impeccable, it is the story itself, a retelling of the Dumas classic, that sent me running for the Pepto Bismol.
It is, without a doubt, the longest 108 minutes you will ever spend in front of a TV set (or movie screen, if you're unlucky enough to catch it in a revival house).

"Camille" is that rare occurance in movies where the story, director, star, and studio are all working in sync.
In the hands of a less remarkable actress, "Camille" would be a footnote in film history, yet another 1930s relic of overacting, the film talent of those days having been trained for the stage and unable to yet realize that less is more on the massive screens upon which these works of art were painted.
From the first moment she appears on screen, one is struck by how her understanding of her craft shaped the next generation of actresses, far more able than her contemporaries to appear natural and unaffected on the screen.

Camille moves along well, but it probably wouldn't be half the film it is were it not for the unique screen presence and talent of its star.
As I was watching the movie, I couldn't help but notice some startling similarities between this film and the more recent, Moulin Rouge, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor.
Some lines in Camille sound almost exactly like one's in Baz's flick, and Greta's character, Marguerite, does resemble Nicole's Satine; at first, they seem over the top party animals, and then you realize they're regular, sensitive girls (and they both have a fatal illness).

In Camille, released in 1937, Garbo gave what is widely regarded as her greatest performance.

We first meet the sculptor as she digs clay with bare fingers from a frozen ditch, in the winter of 1885.
Not only a potent love story, Camille Claudel is also an account of art and its wellsprings, and this is where it excels, especially when we witness Claudel's manic genius at work, driven by the necessity to externalize her emotions in the forms of her sculptures.
Although this film is the story of an artist and does contain many scenes of art in progress, it plays more like a character study than a bioflick on Camille Claudel.

Camille is a typical 80s period piece for television - lavish period costumes, sudsy script, somewhat cheesy music and perfunctory direction - but the real fascination here is in seeing the very young Colin Firth and Greta Scacchi, each in one of their first film roles.
They are both gorgeous of course, and each shows glimpses of the more mature and developed actors they will later become.
Too bad Camille wasn't made in the age of cable, with more developed scripts and better production values.
