Odilon Barrot's earliest recollections were of the October insurrection of 1795.
The death of the duke of Orleans in 1842 was a blow to Barrot's party, which sought to substitute the regency of the duchess of Orleans for that of the duke of Nemours in the event of the succession of the Comte de Paris.

The proposition was accepted, and Barrot accompanied Charles X to the point of embarkation, being, on his return to Paris, nominated prefect of the Seine.
Under the new king Louis-Philippe, Barrot was the first to declare against a reactionary policy.
