The battle took place on Aug. 13, 1704, and pitted Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy against French marshals Camille de Tallard and Ferdinand de Marsin and the Elector of Bavaria.
Marlborough and Prince Eugene allowed their ally, Prince Louis of Baden, to go off and lay siege to the town of Ingolstadt before the battle.
``It says something of their low opinion of their colleague that Marlborough and Eugene were prepared to see him depart with 15,000 Imperialist soldiers at a time when Tallard had arrived at Augsburg with his reinforcements,'' Spencer writes.
