Camp Swift, Texas, officially designated as the 1849th Unit, Eighth Service Command, Army Service Forces, was a major training area for the united States Army and a focal point for the patriotic energies of Central Texans during World War II.
The camp was active during the period of 1942-1946 and was considered one of the finer infantry training areas during World War II by the U.S. War Department.
Upon completion, camp capacity was estimated at 45,000 officers and men and at one time during the height of training, 44,000 occupied the camp of 2,750 buildings.

The 144th, as the Fourth Texas Infantry, saw service in the Big Bend district of Texas, where it was distributed over approximately 600 miles of patrol territory, its detachments at one time covering 22 different stations.
March 18, 1944 the 144th moved to Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi, as a special training unit to conduct advanced infantry training for inactivated tank destroyer and antiaircraft battalions.

 Camp Hale WAC Detachment -- South Pacific
In June of 1944, with the transfer of the 10th Mountain Division to Camp Swift, Texas, the WACs of Camp Hale prepared for reassignment.
The detachment went to a number of posts but, the majority of women went to either Camp Crowder, Missouri, or to the South Pacific.
Many WACs got jungle rot and were plagued by it for years to come.

As the battalion was conducting maneuvers in Jolan, California in November 1942, the Army was preparing a brand new camp to house the 87th on the Continental Divide at Camp Hale, Colorado, at 9,480 feet above sea level.
On 20 December 1944, the 2-87 Mountain Infantry entrained from Camp Swift to Newport News, Virginia and embarked on the USS West Point.
The 2-87 Mountain Infantry was inactivated in November 1945 at Camp Carson, Colorado.

 Battalion History
Arriving at Camp Swift, Texas, on 15 May 1943, the cadre immediately undertook preparations for the new-born battalion, and then proceeded in a training program designed to prepare the battalion for close-in support of infantry, the type of missions to be met under combat conditions.
After setting up headquarters in Rott, Germany, it was decided to establish a rest camp, thereby enabling a rotation plan of rest for war-weary men.
From the time the battalion entered combat on June 29th, 1944, until cessation of hostilities in Europe on May 9th, 1945, the unit expended a total of 152,257 rounds of HE and WP ammunition, and was in combat 315 days in the 11 months of actual combat on the continent.
