Campaign desk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Campaign desk is an antique desk of normal size which was used by officers and their staffs in rear areas during a military campaign.
The campaign desk was usually the private property of the officer, as was his uniform and other military implements.
A smaller version of such a transportable writing table could be considered to be more a field desk than a campaign desk, since it could be moved frequently from one battlefield's rear area to another's as the war went on.

Campaign coverage is a living animal fed on a daily diet of campaign events, spiced up by the occasional scandal with the potential to consume the candidacy of one or both of the men running for office.
And with the story's reemergence, Campaign Desk saw a momentarily rejuvenated White House press corps, demanding that the president be held accountable for his promise to release all his records.
Yet, for months, until the end of August, campaign reporters unquestioningly passed along falsehoods, including the charge that Kerry's wounds were not severe enough to warrant a Purple Heart (severity of injury is not a consideration in the awarding of Purple Hearts).

PressThink: Zachary Roth (And His Boss) Respond to "The Morals Squad at CJR's Campaign Desk"
Campaign Desk made other choices besides the ones that might be grouped (without really fitting) under “tone.” One of them is “argument by authority.” If I say to you: I’m a priest, you’re the laity, and I know what the Church says on this subject… that’s argument by authority.
So here was Campaign Desk describing to Kos the “situation” he himself faces in his own community, now that he’s gone and done it— published the data, violated basic ethics, diminished his credibility, possibly damaged the election, lost the right to be taken seriously by journalists and their readers.
Campaign Desk by the Darts and Laurels people is thus an important undertaking for journalism, (and for the nascent weblog form) in a way that the amateur press watch is not, and PressThink is not.

To understand why this campaign has been hijacked by a small group of veterans bearing a thirty-year old grudge, it's worth examining the institutional susceptibilities of a campaign press corps that has allowed the SBVFT's accusations to take on a life of their own.
Campaign Desk has written many times about the perils of "he said/she said" journalism, the practice of reporters parroting competing rhetoric instead of measuring it for veracity against known facts.
Once the Kerry campaign itself began to hit back by questioning the credibility of the Swift Boat Veterans' claims – and arguing that the group was doing the president's "dirty work" – the press failed to adequately scrutinize the competing arguments at hand.

So, after thwacking the Columbia Journalism Review's "Campaign Desk" website for its insufficient and inaccurate coverage of RatherGate, I asked its managing editor, Steve Lovelady, for a response.

Campaign Desk and the big media world have a very long road ahead of them to prove to the public that we should believe anything they say that cannot be independently verified, and to believe that they are not filtering out news that is inconsistent with their biases.
