President Elect - Articles - Singing to the Oval Office: A Written History of the Political Campaign Song
It cannot be said that the campaign song was an important part of early elections; however, the slip to that argument would be the election of 1800 and the song "Jefferson and Liberty".
The song appeared in 1822, and was used in the 1824 campaign.
One such anti-democrat song was "Taft and Sherman" by George E. Fairbanks to the tune of "Yankee Doodle" and one general song was "Taft the Leader"; lyrics by M. Strauss and Music by P. Fox.

The songs were the center of Whig political gatherings that were staged like modern football pep rallies where the music was the fight songs.
Thus, though campaign songs do not mean what they once did, it is still impossible to imagine reaching the White House without using music's immense power to amuse, provoke, inspire, soothe, or move the American electorate.

Political and Campaign Songs In American Popular Music, Page 1
Politicians and their campaigners have long recognized the value of a good song to cement a message about a candidate in the public's mind and the result is a long history of political songs in America.
This song and the others like it are said to have had a sweeping effect on the outcome of the election, the first political campaign songs to have such impact.
While the campaign song was coming of age, the general political song; one that reflects political sentiments or commentary on an issue was also becoming a regular part of the American political scene.

latimes.com: Songs in the Key of Presidency - October 11, 2000
The presidential campaign song has a grand, bizarre tradition, but the role of the themes has changed dramatically in the years since Van Buren was bedeviled in verse.
This year, however, the songs are relatively anonymous, last-minute selections and come from artists who are neither superstars nor, it turns out, particularly committed to the candidates invoking their handiwork.
Campaign songs have been a part of U.S. presidential politics since the beginning, and the tunes offer a telling, sometimes bizarre commentary on the winners and losers for the nation's highest office.

While those songs haven't exactly withstood the test of times and the changes in musical tastes, the campaign song did reach popularly in 1840, with the election battle between William Henry Harrison and Martin Van Buren.
Harrison's and running mate John Tyler's campaign slogan was "Tippecanoe and Tyler too," referring to Harrison's relation to the victory at the Battle of Tippecanoe.
As a result, their campaign song became "Tip and Tye," a song that jump-started a series of songs written specifically for the campaign.

Theme Party - Politics really is a song and dance. By Mark Steyn   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Dole has run the most ironic, postmodern presidential campaign ever seen--starting with his campaign theme song, the only conceivable purpose of which is to serve as an ironic negation of everything campaign themes are meant to do.
It's a parodic campaign song: Dole obviously has never heard of it, any more than he's heard of Tupac Shakur or those other gangsta rappers his advisers periodically call on him to denounce.
More ironic is that the song is an exquisite musicalization of the candidate's most frequently cited defect: his campaign's lack of any central theme.

Democrats could adopt catchy little tunes such as "Happy Days Are Here Again" (Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932) or "High Hopes" (John F. Kennedy in 1960) and be assured that nothing in the impossibly peppy lyrics would inspire impressionable youth to burn down their school or have unprotected sex on a Ferris wheel.
Since then, the Democrats have been rummaging in the campaign song bargain bin, with mostly disastrous results.
