Benjamin Gue, state legislator, in his speech at the inauguration of first President Adonijah Welch, noted that its location was once, "a monotonous plain of waving grass only broken here and there by scattered groves." From this prairie beginning, Iowa State University’s campus has grown to encompass approximately 140 buildings and landscaping of national renown.

 Iowa State's Campanile--Celebrating 100 Years
Stanton died September 12, 1920, and his will provided that after certain bequests were taken out, the residue of his estate should be turned over to the University for furnishing a memorial to him.
The final cost was $6,510.20 and the Campanile stood 110 feet tall and its main shaft was 16 feet square.
The first bells were placed in the Campanile in 1899.

Today, many American universities have campanile style bell towers as focal points of the campus such as Sather Tower at the University of California at Berkeley and the Memorial Carillion at Iowa State University.
For those who enjoy dice towers (for example, basswood, laser etched, or round medieval), it is time once again to show the design, construction, and painting of a miniature tower made with plaster blocks cast from Hirst Arts silicone molds.
These tall towers were often made of brick, with square bodies, multiple windows, terraced or open floors plans to allow the sounds of the bells to escape, and topped with red terra cotta tile roofs.

AMES, IOWA -- Former Middle East hostage and Iowa State University alumnus Thomas Sutherland will tour the Iowa State University Campanile at 11 a.m.
Sutherland received his M.S. degree in animal science from Iowa State in 1956 and his Ph.D. in 1958.
Sutherland is the commencement speaker for undergraduate ceremonies on Dec. 21.

 Areopagus Lecture Series
The Areopagus Lecture Series brings Christian academics to Iowa State to present their professional work in a public setting where the implications of faith for their work are apparent to followers of Christ and to other members of the university community.
John E. Hare, Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology at Yale Divinity School, will lecture on "Can We Be Good without God?" at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
The purpose of the lecture series is to present the ISU community with a challenge to consider the continuing relevance of the Christian message to contemporary life.

KCCQ radio personality Matt McNeil will live in Iowa State's campanile Sept. 23-24 for the "Bring a buck, build a home" fund-raising campaign.
Funds are sought for a Habitat for Humanity house, which will be built by students and community members during homecoming week, Oct. 5-9.
Other fund-raising initiatives involve a Global Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, Reiman Gardens, the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, a 4-H/Extension Building and an ISU Honors Program Building.
