It is situated at a point where the Murray River is at its closest point to Melbourne, which contributed to its development as a river port during the 1800s.
Echuca is situated close to the junction of the Goulburn, Campaspe and Murray Rivers.
The expansion of the railways from Melbourne to most parts of Victoria, as well as improving roads and fickle river conditions, all combined to lessen Echuca's importance, and by the 1890s her paddlesteamer fleet was in decline.

The Campaspe River runs along the western and southern edges of town and following much of its route is the Campaspe River Walk which passes alongside several attractions including weirs, the ruins of a number of fords and a swimming pool.
Kyneton's racecourse is situated beside the Campaspe River with elm trees lining the main track and it is the venue of several racing and entertainment events including the Woodend and Kyneton Cup.
At the southern edge of town, the Campaspe River flows beside the Kyneton Botanic Gardens which date back to the 1860s and just south of the gardens, an historic bluestone bridge which was built in 1861 spans the river gorge.

A federally funded study into the environmental flow regime of the Campaspe River in Northern Victoria aims to help to improve water quality, reduce salinity and siltation, and restore native fish stocks, Sharman Stone MP, Federal Member for Murray and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Environment and Heritage, said today.
The Cooperative Research Centre for Freshwater Ecology (CRC) is undertaking a three year study to monitor the environmental effects of a trial winter flow of water specifically released in the months between May and October.
Over the past few years, the Campaspe River's natural summer flow has been tripled, while winter flows have been halved.

A group of scientists and river workers have refuted recent media comments attacking the scientific credibility of management initiatives in the Murray-Darling Basin, particularly the results of fish surveys.
Research results from studies including a survey of NSW rivers, analyses of commercial fisheries data, a study of the Campaspe River and pilot studies in the Sustainable Rivers Audit all supported the conclusions and justified concerns for this iconic species of Australian rivers.
In the Campaspe River, only three of the 15 to 18 species predicted to have once lived and bred in the river now have selfsustaining populations.

Located 26 km east of the City of Greater Bendigo, Lake Eppalock was constructed between 1960 and 1964 to provide irrigation supplies from the Campaspe River, and town water supply to Bendigo.
Three spillways cater for the overflow: a concreted main spillway, which runs down to the Campaspe River, and two higher grassed spillways for exceptionally large floods.
Water released into the Campaspe River flows downstream to irrigators as far north as Rochester, 65 km away.

 Walkabout - Kyneton
Kyneton is a progressive rural centre of some 4500 people located 85 km north-west of Melbourne on the Campaspe River and just off the Calder Highway.
The party of explorer Thomas Mitchell crossed the river at or near the future townsite in 1836.
It is very enjoyable to wander along the banks of the Campaspe River from an area south of Piper St to the very pretty racecourse (1867), north of Piper St. There are a few picnic areas en route, including one adjacent Piper St.

The gorge starts about eight river kilometres downsteam from Turpins Falls and continues for another four kilometres to the junction with Pipers Creek.

Had to fish the shaded sections of the river to get the fish.
I was casting lures off the bank when I hooked up on a MASSIVE yellowbelly that fought like a demon before I could finally pull it out from beneath the log that I was standing on.
Had fished on Thursday and earlier on Friday at Lake Eppalock and had caught only carp and 2 turtles, although most of the carp were thumpers and good fun to catch, but I wanted at least one fish to take home, so I thought I would try the Campaspe on the way home.
