To European settlers, Campbell Hill was first known as Hogue's Hill, perhaps a misspelling of the name of the person who first deeded the land in 1830, Solomon Rogue.
Campbell sold the hill and surrounding land to August Wagner, who was the original brewer of Augustiner and Gambrinus beers.
In 1950, the family of August Wagner deeded Campbell Hill and the surrounding 57.5 acres to the Federal government of the United States.

Backtracking, I found my way to Bellefontaine and the general location of Campbell Hill around 3 pm in cloudy weather, although it was considerably brighter and less gloomy than the rain in Indy.
I had covered nearly 2,500 miles at this point and was most chagrined to find a fence surrounding Campbell Hill, with access denied and threats against trespassers!
Campbell Hill sits at the center of a Vocational-Tech college, and during weekends the site is shut to visitors.
