Campbeltown has been linked to Machrihanish by a canal (1794-mid 1880s) that was superseded by the Campbeltown and Machrihanish Light Railway that closed in 1932.

Campbeltown Airport (IATA: CAL, ICAO: EGEC) is located 3 nautical miles (5.6 km) west of Campbeltown, near the tip of the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast of Scotland.
The airport was formerly known as RAF Machrihanish, (after the village of Machrihanish) and hosted squadrons of the Royal Air Force and other NATO airforces as well as the United States Marine Corps.
The airport is at a strategic point over the Irish sea, and was used to guard the entrance to the Firth of Clyde where US nuclear submarines were based at Holy Loch and Royal Navy nuclear submarines based at Faslane Naval Base.

There was also a plan at one stage to connect the airfield to a new pier to be built in the natural harbour at Campbeltown Loch, and at one point the course of a direct link was marked out on the ground, apparently for carrier-based aircraft to be moved to and from the airfield.
This project did not become a reality, but a new pier was built a mile or so away to serve a NATO fuel installation which was built at the same time as the work was in progress at Machrihanish.
I know nothing of flight testing there, although OH-6 or MH-6 helicopters were tested there before being used in action in the Gulf in the 1980's and a couple of days after the Falklands were invaded much equipment was transferred from Machrihanish to a British nuclear submarine, presumably for issue to British special forces.
