Camper Van Beethoven: Cigarettes and Carrot Juice: The Santa Cruz Years - PopMatters Music Review
In five discs, the case for Camper Van Beethoven is made without apology or plea; it's simply a collection of albums that are hard to find now, but were and still are a testament to just how far rock music could be taken without shattering.
Camper Van Beethoven feared no music as alien, despite creating some music that was completely foreign to most people's experience.
Just as certain classic rock albums help explain music in the hippie era, or the metal years, or define punk, these albums capture a certain essence about the '80s post-punk epoch, and whether you're looking to relive your past experiences or create new impressions, this collection is an excellent and highly unique place to start.

At the time of their 1985 debut, Camper Van Beethoven's merging of punk, folk, ska, and world musics was truly a revelation.
Jonathan Segel released three albums as Hieronymous Firebrain from 1990-1994 and two with Jack & Jill for the Magnetic label, followed by a a couple rock cds under his own name and several electronic music cds under his own name and as a duo with Dina Emerson called Chaos Butterfly.
In 2002, Camper Van Beethoven reunited for a nationwide tour on what seemed like a whim, occasioned by a closet-cleaning belated issue of a song-by-song cover of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk, an album they'd recorded as a joke back in 1987.

 Camper van Beethoven Album Reviews
Quite remarkably, half of the album are instrumentals, and while some of them (“9 of Disks,” “Payed Vacation: Greece”) are a bit repetitive, their brevity and uplifting nature makes sure that none of them could be labelled as misfires.
Recorded a mere half year after the debut album and a clear proof that the boys hadn’t been sitting on their asses in the meantime, II and III came out as a mishmash of styles, moods, references and other nonsense.
It already starts with the confusing title: it’s not a twofer, but a single album, divided into a “side 2” (the first 10 songs) and a “side B” (the last nine).

When those lines debuted on Camper Van Beethoven's first record in 1985, there was no way anyone could know they would also serve as the band's epitaph.
If you saw Camper play at its recent Warfield show with Cracker (the two bands share members), you know that, unlike most reunited bands, Camper sounds better than it ever did in its first incarnation, despite for the most part not having played the band's songs for over 10 years.
It was Lowery who got the Camper Van Beethoven reunion rolling when he invited Segel to play violin on Cracker's recording of "White Riot" for the 1999 Clash tribute album.

 Hour.ca - Music - Camper Van Beethoven
Camper's sound dipped liberally into West Indian calypso and ska traditions, American folkways trad (anticipating alt-country by a decade), Eastern European ethnic music and more, fusing it into infectiously poppy ditties over super-ironic lyrics.
Certainly, it was the catalyst that launched their boat, but unlike many of their peers, Camper's deliberate weirdness (not so weird by today's standards) put real commercial success out of reach.
Camper's Tusk wasn't released for years, but it now stands as one the strongest examples of the band's warped genius and musical inspiration.

This being Camper Van Beethoven, of course, the concept is not overly serious: There are space aliens, after all, and "that strange Québécois girl from Cirque du Soleil." In "Hippy Chix," the soldier takes the rebel's oath, swearing, "We might stop and surf a bit/But we would die for hippy chix."

Music Spectrum: Middle Eastern-influenced Rock: Camper Van Beethoven's New Roman Times
Last October’s New Roman Times, the first new album by Camper Van Beethoven in 15 years, comes out of the war-sodden atmosphere surrounding the 2004 election and the “global struggle against violent extremism,” as the Bush Administration is now calling the previously-titled “global war on terror” (Chicago Tribune, 7/31/05).
Camper Van Beethoven breathed new life into the airwaves, netwaves, circuits, and connectors, not just because it was just so good to hear CVB together again, but also because the album is an unstaged rock opera questioning the current military effort in Iraq.
I mention it here in combination with Camper Van Beethoven, not because they match up stylistically, but because Miller does an incredible version of Bob Dylan’s “With God On Our Side.” Dylan’s song is as timely now as it was in the late 60’s.

Camper Van Beethoven - PopMatters Concert Review
Splitting up in 1989, Camper Van Beethoven are one of those forgotten bands who were greatly under appreciated during their time.
By the fifth and final album in 1989, they had evolved beyond their ideological satire of America's college youth, and were focusing on going deeper to the heart of an authentic Americana.
The album saw CVB moving away from foreign folk music and finally dealing directly with their own cultural legacy and American folk styles; using original lyrics instead of irreverent covers were now used to explore the heartland of American society.

Camper Van Beethoven displays a more integrated band style and an emerging political consciousness on "Good Guys and Bad Guys" and "Joe Stalin's Cadillac"; there's also a respectful cover of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Une Fois," the most impressive Indian-cajun fusion in recent memory.
Key Lime Pie — the group's final album prior to an acrimonious breakup — is a decidedly bittersweet swansong, trading the exuberance of prior outings for a crushing sense of disillusionment.

The Campers' gleeful ska/polka stomps called into question the very notion of "authenticity", which is a very good thing because when it comes to music, whether or not it sounds good is far, far more important than whether it's "authentic".
The Campers were a fun little band and a barrel of monkeys, but they never really delivered a consistently satisfying album - with one exception.
The Campers cover a lot of stylistic ground, but it coheres and flows smoothly, from the gloomy "O Death" to the sweetly lovely pop "She Divines Waters" to the full-out rock "Devil Song" to the folky "One Of These Days" to the horn-driven anti-'60s nostalgia "Turquoise Jewelry".

In the late 70s Fleetwood Mac's Rumours was one of those albums that was impossible to avoid, and was proof that having messy relationships with other members of your band and writing catchy songs about them could make you very popular.
Which makes it all the more strange that the (admittedly slightly eccentric) Camper Van Beethoven should have chosen to cover the entire album.
Recorded in 1987 and conceived on a whim, it was a source of irritation to the band themselves.
