Founded in 1983 in Santa Cruz, California, Camper Van Beethoven mixed elements of pop, ska, punk rock, folk, country, and acid rock into an eclectic, catchy formula years before the alternative rock movement took shape.
The group's trademark violin-coated melodies and ironic, Frank Zappa-influenced lyrics put them one step away from being a novelty act in the eyes of many critics, but the band had gone from silly to experimental with the intricate, psychedelic pop meanderings of their self-titled third album.
Members of Camper Van Beethoven collaborated with Eugene Chadbourne on a number of records under the name Camper Van Chadbourne.

Eugene Chadbourne's esoteric banjo and guitar riffing works well with the experimental folk jazz of two ex-Camper Van Beethovens, Jonathan Segel (violin, other stringed instruments) and Victor Krummenacher (bass).
Camper Van Chadbourne make it difficult to tell whether the tottering compositions are collections of brilliant mistakes, documents of unprepared improvisation, or some sort of cog in a gigantic master plan to convince people that music could be stranger than you could ever imagine and you'd still like it.

The title like the collaborators gives the listener many unusual performances and the collaborators are more than just that by whatever name they utilize, for they are seasoned musicians having much fun and performing jazz from their unique perspective, such as on "let's go back in time."

Camper Van Chadbourne is (or, until very recently, 'was') avant-country-jazz-punk guitarist extraordinaire Eugene Chadbourne and, from the largely (and sadly) overlooked, er, avant-country-jazz-punk group Camper Van Beethoven, bassist Victor Krummenacher and violinist and mandolinist Jonathan Segel.
Those performances were recorded and selections are presented here, on the 'sci-fi thriller feature' Revenge of Camper van Chadbourne (that description, incidentally, is from Chadbourne's hilarious sleevenotes, which go into such facts as how bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley has the world's largest collection of pornography).
Well, CVC have lost none of their appeal over that lost decade; not the you would have expected to given at least Chadbourne's musical development in the time.

It's an interesting record, too, because some of Chadbourne's best work has involved covering other artists' classic material, most notably John Lennon and Hank Williams, and this is a record of nothing but covers.
Along with the team of Camper Van Beethoven alumni Jonathan Segel and Victor Krummenacher (hence, Camper Van Chadbourne), the album consists of beautifully strange renditions of Donovan's "Summer Day Reflection," Miles Davis' "Milestones," Phil Ochs' "Knock on the Door," and many others.
If you can imagine what it'd be like to sit and listen to American standards being performed by expatriate musicians armed with traditional instruments in the busy streets of Cambodia, the sounds of happy frogs and noisy passersby in the background, then you've got a glimpse of what this album sounds like.

I was never a huge fan of Camper Van Beethoven, but I definitely enjoyed their music and was kind of bummed when they split in 1990.
It's similar to the cacophony of an orchestra tuning their instruments all at once before the start of a big performance.
Eugene Chadbourne, the aforementioned supposed genius, wrote these tunes, with the exception of a few covers, and to his credit I can see how some people are charmed by the social commentary and overtly political lyrics.

Probably the most twisted hoedown you'll ever hear as Chadbourne gets political, shows off his banjo licks and invites a number of musicians to jam along.
The recording with the Camper Van crew sounds live and I suspect that many of these tracks were recorded at completely different locations and times.
As twisted as Eugene can get (especially with the extraneous between-tracks material), it's clear that he knows how to play and has some sort of regard for the music used in his idiosyncratic platform.
