Campfire Tales is, well, pretty much exactly what it sounds like, an anthology of horror stories told around a campfire.
There is a "hook" to the campfire scenes as well, but they exist mainly to provide a framing structure for the four urban legends.
If you watch Campfire Tales you can see all of them when they were much younger and not at all famous, and that's actually kind of cool.

We have been informed that (thanks largely to us and to you, our readers!), Campfire Tales will be shown at two midnight screenings at the prestigious Laemelle Sunset 5 Theater on the Sunset Strip (at the corner of Crescent Heights Boulevard).
Campfire Tales has indeed been released on videotape (it is available at some Blockbuster Video stores), but New Line Cinema has declined to send us ANYTHING about the movie: no press kit, no photos, no posters -- nada.
Christopher Masterson co-stars with Jay R. Ferguson, James Marsden, and Devon Odessa in The Vault's urban legends horror film Campfire Tales, directed by David Semel, Martin Kunert and Matt Cooper.

But as anthology movies go, it was probably the best one since "Tales From the Hood." The stories are apparently based on real-life urban legends.
The best story of the bunch may be the film's '50s flashback opener, which is a typical urban legend story, but ends too quickly.

There is a little resolution to their situation at the end that left me pretty apathetic, but at least they tried.
The main problem I had with this movie (and just try and tell me I'm wrong), is that urban legends typically have a ‘punchline'--a final twist or payoff that makes the listeners gasp or laugh or at least react in some way.
Campfire Tales tells us four urban legends, and only the first one ("The Hook") gets the punchline right.

The wraparound is quite well drawn too, with some good characterizations drawn among the four campfire characters.
The ending makes it another variant on the final twist of Dr Terror's House of Horrors (1964) which by now is starting to seem ever so slightly gimmicky.

While they're waiting for help to come, they decide to build a campfire, and what else is there to do (fully clothed) around a campfire then tell scary stories.
Still, each of these stories' outlines will be familiar to many people, so a lot of the element of surprise could be lost, but there's just enough originality in their presentation to make the film full of genuine surprises.
The fl levels and contrast help create a very dark look to these spooky tales; a look that almost grows too dark at times, but is balanced just enough in all areas to avoid this problem.
