Campsall is the central village in the former Campsall Parish located in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Prior to the industrial revolution, the area to the east was occupied by the inaccessible and waterlogged marshes of the Humberhead Levels, whilst to the west was the Barnsdale Forest, an area associated with the legend of Robin Hood and various outlaws and bandits who preyed upon travellers on the Great North Road.
During this time the Bacon-Franks abandoned Campsall Hall; it was rumoured that Mrs Bacon-Frank was growing tired of the view of Askern Colliery from the Hall.

 Medieval Theories of the Syllogism
Campsall seems to have held that the system of modal syllogisms presented in the Prior Analytics was intended for divided modal sentences, and so he tries to prove that what Aristotle said is basically correct when modal sentences are understood in this way.
It is natural to assume, as Campsall does, that Aristotle meant his theory of modal syllogisms to cover divided modal sentences, since the reading of composite sentences Campsall proposes entails that they are all singular and that Aristotle's theory is not a theory for singular sentences.
Campsall thus abandons the fundamental Aristotelian principle of the necessity of the present (see Knuuttila 1993 and the entry on medieval theories of modality for discussion of criticisms of this principle in the late thirteenth century).

Sure, the Kingsholm crowd were only too happy to advise (not surprisingly, they felt that the penalty count should have been even more firmly weighted in Gloucester's favour) but the referee's official advisers, the touch-judges, were remarkably reluctant to get involved.
Campsall was therefore left to police a typically passionate local derby, with all the incentive for trickery, thuggery and cheating that inevitably accompanies such matches, on his own.
As in cricket, where umpires will call for a television replay at the drop of a hat, the man in charge has been encouraged to abrogate his responsibility in favour of supposedly superior methods.

Campsall's error was further compounded when following agression in the scrum, the two hookers were sent to the sin bin to set an example.
But with the Leicester forwards declining to compete on Gloucester's ball at the line-out, Gloucester's pack continued to apply concerted pressure in the scrummage and eventually Campsall's patience ran out and when the Leicester pack dragged down a maul on their line he awarded a penalty try to Gloucester under the posts.
It is hard to see why Brian Campsall chose to ignore such blatant misuse of the rules when he had awarded a penalty try in the first quarter of the match for similar professional fouls.

Campsall Church is very ancient and reputed to be the place where Robin and Marian were married.
The Cluniac priory of Monk Bretton, near Robin Hood's Well, is dedicated to that saint, as too was Campsall and one of the chantry chapels in Wakefield.
The Magdalen cult was strongly involved with the legends of the Holy Grail, the Merovingian royal family in France, Knights Templar and the medieval Cathar heresy, although it is not certain whether any of these influences had found their way into the English Church.
