Aviation enthusiasts continued to push for a permanent, safe home for the collection, and in 1982, their hopes soared when the government announced funding for new buildings for the National Gallery of Canada and what would eventually become the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
Construction workers broke ground for the museum on May 25, 1983, and because of the size of the aircraft in the collection, the building had to be at least 12 metres high with clear spans of 45 metres.
The museum is also home to the last remaining pieces of the ill-fated Avro Arrow, Canada's first and last supersonic interceptor whose cancellation by the Diefenbaker government in 1959 remains a source of controversy to this day.

The Arrow was created to replace the CF-100, which had been Canada's front line fighter for a number of years, and the RCAF believed that with the Cold War at hand, the frontline fighter should be changed to meet the new threats.
