Environmental Scan of Contemporary Dance Presentation in Canada
In addition to self-presentation, contemporary dance presentation is shared between a few specialized presenters who may or may not have their own performance space, multidisciplinary presenters with varying degrees of commitment to the discipline, and specialized and multidisciplinary national and international festivals.
Festivals that program contemporary dance play an important role in presentation, not only because they offer audiences direct access to dance, but also because they tend to provide points of contact and exchange between creation/production companies and other presenters.
Although multidisciplinary festivals are tending to introduce more contemporary dance into their programming, one can question their real capacity to offset the lack of an international showcase devoted specifically to disciplinary development of contemporary dance.
